Show WOULD DISCUSS ' UTAH'S FISH AND GAME CONDITIONS To the Sport KdUor of The Tribune; Shall our fiii and hununx license be raiKfcd from ? 1.25 lo $1. or shall It be f-.egrcpated and a charye of S2 be m;ide fur each iishins or hunting license? That is a question that i-s Interesting tlie ypfirtsim-'Mi at the resent time. Uur state fish and game commissioner Hugestfk that the price be raised from SI. V.i to?2 for a fish and hunting license li-cense and ulso suggests that the money thus obtained by the increased price of licences bo used to screen irrigating ditches, canals and pmall Htreama njid also to establiah some aviaries, game sanctuaries and preserves. In plain Kngl-sh, the wants more monpy for the belter conservation, preservation pres-ervation and propagation of our fish and game. Along with thousands of our sportsmen, sports-men, I am deeply interested In the question ques-tion of fish and game conservation and propagation. Like them. I am anxious to know what is being done In tills line and reach a wise conclusion afl to what I should be done for the best interests pf the state and the sportsmen. That the ditches be screened and that we have game refuges, avaries and preserves pre-serves is an old hobby of mine. Other states have them, why not Utah? But it takes money to carry out the?e suggestions to a successful completion and our enmmisfioners have nil claimed that they have never had sufficient funds at their d isposal successfully to enforce our present laws, much less spending any money tn other directions. Mr. Siddoway, from ail indications and reports, poems to have had the interests inter-ests of the pportsmen and the department depart-ment at heart, but has lacked sufficient f-unds to carry out the tilings that he and the sportsmen would like to accomplish. Let's get together and boost the game along by .raising the price of hunting and fishing licenses. Let's give Mr. Klddoway some money to spend and' watch just how he will use it and note how much the state will benefit bene-fit or loso by the expenditure. Would it be asking too much, then, to have tlie commissioner publish a bf-ennial bf-ennial periodical devoted exclusively to flie work and accomplishments of his department and the wild life resources of the state? He will not only be doing his duty by the state, but will also confer a favor upon the men who are furnishing the money through the license system for conserving and increasing the game animals, ani-mals, birds and fish of the state. It seems reasonable that the men who are contributing the money to defray the entire expense of conducting this department depart-ment are entitled to be advised and know what tho game and fish department is doing with the money that is paid in annually for the protection and increase of the fish and game and what the definite defi-nite results are. Not a copper cent of taxes goes Into the game and f'sh fund. It is the sports-rr(9i, sports-rr(9i, through the hunter license system, who provide the funds through which the laws giving protection tn game, fish and wild fowl ;md b'rrts are enforced. Is it asking tui much. then, that the men who p;y for a definite purpose should a.,;it to be consulted as to the making of the laws and how the money Is being spent in enforcing them, and of the results obtained? Xow Is the time to get together, before our state legislature convenes, nnd talk these matters over that are of such vital importance to our stato and our sportsmen. sports-men. The writer will be pleased to meet any of our sportsmen who care to express ex-press an opinion as to what should be done for the possible, betterment of conditions con-ditions governing our fish and came department, de-partment, at his office, 325 Ness building. build-ing. His office hours are 2 to 4 p. m. DORSJSY BURGESS. Salt Lake, December 28. |
