Show BR0W1G RETURNS FROM CONVENTION j Officials of 13 Western States Will Meet Here on January 3. Highway officials representing thirteen western and northwestern states are invited in-vited to attend a meeting to be hold here commencing on Friday, January 5. to. consider niean of saving federal road appropriations to states of large area and small population. The invitations are sent out by Slate Road Engineer Ira R. f-yrowning, who returned yesterday from Chicago, whtre he attended the annual inciting of slate highway officials of the United States. As one of the last acts of the Chicago meeting it was proposed, Mr. Browning says, to go on record as favoring the iaw on federal aid roads so as to change the rlio of government support with that of state contribution In order to give commonwealths com-monwealths of large area and small population popu-lation a better opportunity to meet requirements. re-quirements. It was decided, however, to leave the basis )f the recommendation to be fixed at a meeting of representatives of the states mostly interested those of the west and non'owest. Lhioer the present law the federal and state governments divide appropriations, for federal aid road projects on a ifftv-fifly ifftv-fifly basis. In western states, some of which have from one to ten population tc the square mile, notwithstanding long stretches of road to be built, repaired, improved and maintained, it is difficult to meet this requirement. Engineer Browning says. It is a remedy for this situation which is sought to be inaugurated inaugu-rated at the meeting here in January. Slates invited to send representatives are Washington, Oregon. California. Arl-scone. Arl-scone. Nevada. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dako'ta and Utah. |
