Show judge smiths lecture hon H W smith delivered a lecture before the society of the B Y academy last evening on the legal profession the subject is a very broad one and mr smith thought he might biye some information that the had not before understood the profession of a lawyer is by the cornmon people probably more than any other profession some people look upon the attorneys as being somebody higher in society than the average people but it is a sad mistake to think that a lawyer can make bis monay without plenty of work and etude if he attends to his duties in the bar and deairas to make a tuc cees of hie profession fes sion he has all that he can do without becoming too interested in politics the lawyers as a rule do not become the greatest statesmen and politicians bat chev do become the best and wisest legislators they are the ablest end most competent ones in whose hands to entrust the legislative work whenever there has been a legisla tiva body without enough lawyers to dictate the proceedings there have absen the moat vicious and absurd laws enacted we haye been prote ted so ling by wise legislation and which hag in most cases been enacted by lawyers that we do not fully appreciate our situation all the courts of the land are governed and controlled by the legal professors if a man gets into trouble the first thing he does is to go to an attorney and set his advice on the subject we could not get a mechanic or a farmer to successively prosecute and bring to justice the crim finals but we must depend upon our attorneys to do it for ua it is true that there a few men of the legal who have disgraced themselves and lost the confidence of the majority of the people but it is a very few as compared with other professions fes the lawyers are so taught and trained that their better judgment is brought out and they chuat control their passions and temper the legal profession originally sarane out ot the clergy in basony the beat and wisest of the preachers were chosen and to them was given tha to decide the disputes that might arise when one of these men would render a decision he would write it down and then when another similar case would arise they would refer to the written decision for information the speaker told the young men who desired to become lawyers that they nuat bo honest patient and have a fairly good education such as they get in the B X academy but dont start out thinking that you will get rich he said because it takes a beag time to get a reputation and gain confidence the thought the time had arrived when the lawyers ought to egand firmly together as a strong wall against anarchy as the people are becoming discontented and are drifting away from the wise government they have here gafore enjoyed on motion of apostle lyman judge smith was tendered a yote of thanks for lis able lecture |
