Show THE DEAD LETTER OFFICE that W arc to ieter Iet tr the number of pieces of dead mail matter received at the dead letter office during the fiscal year 1893 was an increase over the receipts of the previous year of pieces or a little more than 5 per cent this increase of ua delivered matter according to the albany press and less than the per cent of increase ot matter mailed as shown by tha statistics of other branches of the postal service and would seem to indicate more caroa on the part of the people in addressing their letters as well aa increased vigilance on tho part of postmasters to secure proper delivery the ii timber of pieces treated in the dead letter office including those on hand from the previous year was 7 hiese were classified as follows were ordinary unclaimed letters were addressed to persons in alie care of hotels were mailed to foreign countries and returned by the various postal administrations as undeliverable were addressed to initials or fictitious persons and were domestic registered letters there were pieces of mail matter of foreign origin and were ordinary letters without in closures which had once been returned by the dead letter office to addresses contained therein and failing of delivery were again sent to the dead letter office for final disposition alic number of letters clashed as comprised 1144 containing articles which were not transmissible iri the mails were either entirely unpaid or paid less than one full rate and could not therefore be forwarded were either deficient in address or addressed to places not post offices or to post offices which had no existence in the state named and were classed under the general head of misdirected were without any addres whatever and were classed as miscellaneous there were alo received unclaimed and able parcels of third and fourth class mattan |
