Show ENTIRE UTAH QUQTA 5001 TO BE FILLED District Eoard Certifies 176 Names in One Day to National Army. BEAVER INVESTIGATED Five Exemptions Granted in County Revoked; Work Was Slighted. Thirteen draft districts in C'tiih out of thirty-four have completed the certification cer-tification of their entire quota of men, and the district exemption board looks forward to completing the entire state within a short time. At the present time the district board has certified 2124 names to the national army, and there remains 4S3 names to be certified to till the entire quota asked by the federal government from this state. "Vesterdav the board broke all records by certifviug 1715 names in one day, besides passing upon a number of matters mat-ters which had been sent in by the local draft bodies throughout the state. The draft districts in the state which have already completed their work and which have certified their full quota of men to the district board are Salt Lake C'itv district No. 2, Beaver conn-tv. conn-tv. Boxelder county, Cache county, Du-chesno Du-chesno county, Garfield county, brand countv, Iron county, Piute county, San Juan countv, Sanpete county and Wasatch county. In a number num-ber of other counties throughout the state the work has been practically completed, and it is estimated that within a week the greater number ot the twentv-one districts yet to complete com-plete their quotas will have sent up sufficient names to fill the number desired de-sired from Utah. Will Move Quarters. Owing to the growing work of the district board and the voluminous records which have accrued since the board started work, larger quarters will lie occupied by it on Monday. Saturday Satur-day will be set aside as moving day, and tho board will move from the rooms on tho third floor of tho federal building, which it has occupied since organization, to the federal court room on the north side of the second floor. This court room has not been used for the holding of court since the United States circuit courts were don-o away with, and has been devoted to tho holding hold-ing of examinations for civil service mid for interstate commerce hearings. The new quarters will give the board more filing room and will also prevent visitors from interfering with the work of the board to as great an extent as in the past. Reports on Beaver. Rex V. Williams, special agent of the district board, returned yesterday from Heaver county, where he made an examination of" the work of the local exemption board there. He went over the charges which had been made to the effect that tho Beaver county board had granted exemptions to persons per-sons married since the declaration of war, and caused the board to revoke five exmptions granted to men who had married since April. Mr. Williams, in his report to the district board yes-terdav, yes-terdav, recited that the local board memhers in Beaver county had many private interests which conflicted with the exemption board work, and as a result the board work suffered. Work Is Complete. V. I). White, clerk of the Beaver county board, was found to be the countv clerk, a bishop of tho Mormon church, and in addition, trying to get in the crop from a large farm. These duties interfered with the exomption board work to such an extent that the mailing of certifications and the work of the board in other respects was seriously seri-ously delayed. The sheriff of Beaver county is chairman of the draft board and he was busy with court work. The county draft, however, i6 complete, and has certified fifty-three names, while the quota was about forty-four. The district board today will take up h la.rge number of exemption claims which have been filed from counties throughout the state. The majority of the claims are based on dependents, although a number of agricultural claims for exemption are still coming com-ing in. |
