Show FORCE OF EXAMPLE. The fine example set by Governor Whitman of New York in calling a special election in order that a successor suc-cessor to tho late Representative Conry might be elected in time to participate in the organization of the new house has been productive of the very best of results. The Fifteenth congressional district is solidly Democratic and Governor Gov-ernor Whitman's call was issued when it was certain such action would benefit bene-fit the Democrats. But it now seems probable that the members of the latter lat-ter party will even up the score so 'far as they are able by assisting in amending amend-ing the laws of New Hampshire so that a successor to the late Representative Cyrus A. Sulloway may be chosen bo-fore bo-fore tho date of the extraordinary session ses-sion of congress, April 16. Champ Clark is credited with making the suggestion, and Senator Hollis of the Granite state is one of the moving spirits. Even though the Republicans might be able to amend the law in the face of Democratic opposition, it is tar better that the two parties --hould work in harmony as true Americans should ; in time of great stress. The house of j representatives will be intensely patriotic pat-riotic with either Champ Clark or Mr. Mann in the speaker's chair. |
