Show V THEY ARE ABE ANGRY W over judge julge jones ero proposition position TO REDUCE SALARIES some reports damaging to him made by the county attorney the county court met in special session today at the county court house all members of the court coart were present SALARIES CANNOT BE REDUCED the first business taken up op was the matter of the reduction ot oi salaries the report of the committee to whom the communication of judge jones jonea was referred was made ond accepted it is to the tha effect that the salaries of the probate judge and selectmen according to see sec vol 1 of the comi piled laws of 0 utah shall receive 4 per day and 23 cants cantis per mile when in in attendance at the court then follow the amount drawn by the various members of the court for the year 1891 1801 1892 aal no to september 1893 as follows selectman holdaway 1891 3 1860 1892 deal in Hs HIS place to sept 1893 jones 1891 1892 Is to sept 1893 3 2 lund ld evans evana 1891 93 20 to sept judge jones county work 1892 1893 the report continues that the asses mars bors and collectors compensation is established by law the recorder sheriff abe riff coroner bee inspector justices of the peace and constables aro regulated by fees established by law the salaries sal arlea of the county clerk county attorney treasurer and county surveyor are within tho power of the court but bat the committee was of the opinion that their salaries are not too high the clerks salary is fixed at 1200 12 per year but the reports says that since the salary was waa placed at this figuro figure tho the work keeps the clerk con scantly employed and most all the tha time he is forced to employ help and at times is compelled to employ a threat great deal of extra help hence we are of the opinion that his salary should be kept at the same figure that it is today the same recommend recommendation tion w was as m made ade in the case of the tha county attorney he is paid per annum but the duties of the office keep the attorney employed at least one third of the time 1 th then en follows follow a commendable explanation of what his duties are the explanation is also maja made that the attorney has to buy hia bis own stamps etc out of the 60 allow d tita the county treasurer surer receives a of 0 per year and we are sf of th opinion that thia compensation is low enough etc the report is signed by A J evans and A D gash on motion of selectman deal the report was referred back to the commit tee for it to consult with each county counte officer to sae aae what he ha is receiving as a salary and what reduction he will agree to THE AFTER THE prosecuting attorney gash bitted a lengthy report on an the single office of th tha 3 probate judge after a few faw words of excuse ils to the reason way the report is made and which I 1 eamons do not come under the duties of the attorn attorney evs office according to the previous report mr gish goes on to state what the law contemplates are the duties of the probate judges office then he bays we find aiom the record the average compensation of the selectmen for the year 1891 1801 was waa we va find for the same vear the ithe probate judge received or at the rate of 4 per day for every work day and to apply on mileage for the year more than th an all a 11 the other three members combined with his big fees as uro probate bate judge on the side aide but no time tima left in which to attend to the tha bu business ainess in that department that for the year tear 1892 the average compensation of the selectmen was and that the probate judge received 1100 together with the probate business in fees nut not so eo much as the year before from the fact that lie be made an extended xen ded trip East which consumed so some ive five weeks or more of the time thus ianus far up to the 3 d day a y of august 1893 the selectman received an aa average of while the probate judge indge receil received rea with his bis fees as probate judge the above showing led me to ins in iv esti zate further and I 1 at once began a search as to every act US aa RD an official of the probate judge for the quarter ending may 31 ISU 1893 and find ane following results the three months of march april may alay bava 92 days 13 sundays and and one holiday leaving 1 78 work days wo we find from the probate ju ill gea 16 sworn statement to the bounly court the following to wit CLAIMS OF AND to J D jonii ommittee tf work for quarter ending endine moy may slat dr march 1 to 6 doyi lay ser sery cices icea in ju county court at al 4 per day 2400 may 31 to 50 dayts davs on oa highways Digh ways at 4 per day to miles at 2 20 2000 to 10 days on county court and public prope ty to 10 days daya poi and aad indi indigent zent 40 DO total here flare follows the ha oath that the forea ing is correct with the clerks cleas attest attests 1 thus thue it will be seen continues mr gash that 76 full days daya was athis this 1 ia 8 the learned attorneys own langu language agel worked for utah county in the quarter leaving two work days daya in which to perform the work of utah countis coun tys pro bate court and to til attend to the duties devolving dav upon him as a member of the board of the territorial insane aay lum As a member of said board he be attended march april lath and may at 4 per day oa may a bill was allowed to him in the sum of for extra committee work at 4 per day as aa statute provides provide oya 6 days thus consuming all the work days of this quarter ter with to go on the sun sundays V ani yet no probate work perform performed ed ad it now becomes our duty to see eee what the probate record will show for this ih ia quarter and on strict ex examination guarter w we e find that a business was transacted in t that hat court on 49 distinct days davs during daring the quarter 16 ot which had bad a heavy cocket which certainly ceita took the whole day for each and some 0 of f the others were moderately good booi gooi dockets the fees aagre aggregating 9 abing 24 1 50 or close to this amount making in all his receipts for this quarter from froin asylum county and probate work besides the fees he receives for uniting people in tho the holy bonds of matrimony and issuing marriage I 1 license licause in the absence of the clerk the probate business will in all probability not be as aa heavy in any other quarter during his term in the of fichas cipe aa during the quarter investigated as ill hia a yearly compensation in that bat office from tro m fees alone will not exceed in my judgment to pa if after a minute examination you find that there has haa been more money paid joany to any officer than tho the law would permit it ought to be paid back to the county with 8 per cent interest from the date said money was received by him
