So far as can be learned, this is the first request for armed forces to escort es-cort drafted men yet made in the United ytates. Referred to Governor. Crilberl Williams, clerk of the district board, rofeired Mr. Aldrich's requests to Governor SMmon Bamberger, and yesterday yester-day morning Mr, Aldrich took the matter up by telephone with the governor's office. of-fice. Mr. Aldrich explained that he had called the drafted men to report two days earlier, as he feared many would be late and would not report. Mr. Aldrich then appealed for f aid to bring in the absentees and then conceived the idea that it would be best for the drafted men to bo sent out of his district under an armed guard. Salt Lake county district No. 1 takes in Gartield, Bingham and practically all of the western side of the county. A large number of aliens employed at the mines and the smelters have been drafted, draft-ed, and this has caused the local bo;aJL much trouble. |
