Show BITTER DEBATE OVER EMKCG1IS Convention of United Mine Workers Discussing Serious Charges. INDIA N' A POL IS, Ind., Jan. 10. A bitter bit-ter debate was precipitated in the convention con-vention of the United Mine Workers today to-day over a proposition to have a committee com-mittee appointed to Investigate alleged ex t ra agnncr, in the financial affairs of the organization. Charges were made that t here was a waste of money ; that some of the men under salary in the union padded expense accounts and were inefiieient, and counter charges were made that Die Instigators of the pro posed investigation had only ulterior motives mo-tives in view and were actuated in asking ask-ing for a scrut iny of the financial affairs af-fairs of the mine workers by a desire to bring discredit to the organization and its leaders. The discussion began early in the day and still was in full swing when the convention was adjourned until un-til tomorrow. The battle of words resulted when President James II. White said the proposed investigation whs an excuse of "insidious foes of unionism'' to attack the administration. In the forefront of the tight on the, other side were Adolpii t'.ormer and Duncan McDonald, both of Illinois. White read, letters written by Gormer to McDonald, to prove, he said, that they were asking for an investigation investiga-tion for political purposes within the organization, or-ganization, and McDonald retorted that he "never resorted to t ho underhand methods of robbing a man's office to get documents." The rluht began when the committee on resolutions moved to non-concur in a resolution calling for the appointment of a committee of three to Investigate expense ex-pense accounts of elected and appointed officials, the time they spent in the field, and whether their activities were satisfactory satis-factory to the members in the districts in which they worked. The resolution recited that the over-head expenses of the International organization were too high and that the investigation probably would suggest methods of greater economy econ-omy and efficiency. |
