IMMENSE HOTEL AND SANITARIUM FLANNED One Thousand Acres of Land Surrounding" the Springs Will Be Improved. TTith the transfer of the title to the famoua Beck's Hot Sprirgs, in the northern nor-thern part of the city, from Jmnes W. Breon of Spokane to J. W. Mollm of ?alt Lake, it became known yesterday that plans were under way for the establishment es-tablishment in the near future of one of the world's greatest health and amusement amuse-ment resorts all practically within the limits of Salt Lake City. After five vears of preparation Mr. I Mellen was ready to announce yet-terdav that the preliminary plans for the big resort had been completed aDd that with the financing of the project, whih he does not anticipate will be at all difficult, the work of constructing the million-dollar resort will be .begun. To begin with, Mr. MeUeu has purchased pur-chased I0C0 acres of laod running from the foothills on the east, down to the banks of the Jordan river on the west. Included in this land are scores of bot sulphur springs, including the famous old Beck's Hot Springs. The old Hot Springs lake covered some 300 acres of this land. This lake was entirely drained and the land it covered has all been reclaimed. Work May Begin Soon. While Mr. Mellen does not expect that any construction work at the new resort will he. begun this year, he said yesterday that there had already been so many inquiries relative to the property prop-erty and eo many persons were interested inter-ested iD making the project a success that it was possible that plans might be so matured as to permit of work on the resort being begun almost immediately. immedi-ately. In a genera way the plans of Mr. Mellen and his associates contemplate the construction of a health and amusement amuse-ment resort second to none in America and in some features unequaled in the world. A large hotel with the best of accommodations is planned. A lar're sanitarium will, of course, be one of ttie main features. In this connection nature na-ture has afforded a variety of bathing to be found nowhere else in the world. There will be inside and outside pools of all kinds. From Great Salt Lake will be brought salt water for salt pluugps. From the famous hot springs will be brought heated sulphur water of almost every stage of temperature, from water luke warm to water boiling bot. And in addition the plans are to have a large fresh water lake for fresh water bathing bath-ing on the site of the old Hot Springs lake. The bed of the obi lake will be deepened, a sandy beach provided and I a streamlet of fresh water diverted to it. Gardens and Driveways. One thousand acres of grounds will be laid out in gardens and driveways. A five-mile automobile speedway will be installed. Polo grounas, golf links and tennis courts will be provided. A baseball park will be built. Mr. Mellen Mel-len and his associates plan to so construct con-struct the resort that it will attract pleasure-lovers and health-seekers from all parts of the world. As a reason why the resort, should be established as soon as possible it is poiuted out that the great watering places of the old world fo which many thousands of Americans as well as Europeans Euro-peans make pilgrimai each year are now closed because o the world-wide war. Before such piaeas Pad Nou-heim. Nou-heim. Maneubad. Kissenjren, Carlsbad. Baden Baden, Wiesbaden and other famous fa-mous Austrian and German cures are re established it is hoped to have a L'reat American health resort so established estab-lished that the world's wealthy folk will be coming here for pleasure and rest and health. -) far h.ive the plaus for the resort progressed that a number of prominent Salt. Our Plans, to far as they have matured, mean a big thing for te city and the state." It cannot be ail done in a minute. 1 had thought this was a poor vear to finance a project such as this, yet when it became generally known that I had in mind the construction of a big resort many prominent local men came to me and gave me assurances assur-ances of support. Will Cost Million. It will require $l,00'000 to carry car-ry out our plans -for the construction construc-tion of the resort ami we are ready to 0 ahead as soon as tho money is in sinr. it may ne mat those who are interested in making a success of this project will with to begin work immediately. We have ample room for all vie desire to have 'at the resort. For one thing, we p'au a five-mile auto au-to speedway. Then we want, also polo grounds, golf links. tennis courts and baseball grounds. In addition to our hotel, which should have every accommodation afforded afford-ed by the very be-t hotels in tho country, we want, of course, a sanitarium, san-itarium, with baths of everv nature na-ture salt baths from the lake, hot sulphur baths of every temperature, and fresh water baths. We expect to deepen the bed of Hot Springs lake and make of it a laro fresh water lake, for boating, bathing and fishing. We also plan to have outdoor out-door salt, sulphur and fresh water plunges. There appears to be no reason why such a resort ?hon!d not become be-come one of the. greatest in the world. The location is ideal and the water is wonderful. With proper prop-er accommodations it should attract people from all over the world to Salt Lake City. |
