Jay Hartman was essentially a self made man, and there Is not one of his thousands of friends throughout the west who will not ijay that his work was well done He lrtually began life in an or phanage In Cleveland Ohio When he was little more than a baby he was adopted by a family named Sampllner There were two boys in this family and Mr Hartman waa given an equal oppor tunlty with them. When the two Samp liner bos and Mr Hartman grew up to be young men they came west to make their fortunes They settled at first In southern Ca I fornla, but later came further east The Sampliners went to Grand Junct on and engaged in the clothing bus ness One of them Joseph Sampllner was until re cently mayor of Grand Junction Mr Hartman settled in th s city and entered in the emp oy of S oan & DeBruehl He later went with the Ca I forn a Wine company and Anally to Cheyenne Wvo with Id eman Bros He a so was engaged in the min ng bus ness in the Saratoga d strict In Wyoming In 101 he entered, the emploj of Eieger &, Ltndley and for ten years was manager of that firm s c gar department. In 1911 he entered business for himself go ng Into partnership with, the late Ju us Frumkln. Later Mr Hartman moved to Ogden and opened the Lvceum theater on Twen y fifth street. He was Interested in this theater at the t me of his death. Speaking of Mr Hartman Char es H. Lind ey of the firm of Rleger &.
