Leebold of Berkeley, Cal.. when he went to police heaqnarters about 0 o'clock last night to report the loss of a sample case, only to be informed that the article was already in the possession posses-sion of Desk Sergeant Dan Grnndvig, and that tho man who had stolen it was behind bars in the city jail. Leebold, who sells peanut vending machines for a manufacturing concern, had left his combination sample and correspondence case on a benh in the lobbv of the Kenyou hotel late in the afternoon. It disappeared, and Leebold waited until reasonably sure that some of his friends had not taken the case to "kidM him, when ho decided to tell the police about it. Much to his pleasure and amazement he found hia property at headquarters. A young man giving his name as C. L. Smith, a etranger in the city, was arrested ar-rested in a pawnbroker's shop on Commercial Com-mercial street bv Patrolman W. F. Crow when trying to dispose of Leebold Lee-bold s sample case. He admitted ad-mitted stealing the sample case and was booked on a charge of grand larcenv. The police say that Smith is not the voung man 'b right name and suspect him of being a professional pro-fessional hotel robber.
