Statement of Nelson. Concerning the accident, Joseph Nelson, general manager of the resort, said last night: Of course the accident resulted from the failure of the automatic switch 1 to operate. There can be no question about that. Why it did. whether because be-cause of its being jammed with a rock or for some other reason, we have not been able to determine and perhaps will not be able to do so. Engineers have always worked under instructions instruc-tions to pass the switch at very low speed. In the future this will be enforced to the point of bringing the train down almost to a stop, until it has been made sure that it is on the right track. The switch was installed after being tested out thoroughly by the company's com-pany's engineers and until this occasion occa-sion has vindicated their judgment. That it has been discovered to be less than 100 per cent secure will do much to aid us in forestalling the possibility pos-sibility of a like accident that might prove disasterous. |
