Show granbacka Gray backa perpetual snow A party of local explorers among whom were the rev J H cross and bev A A holden has just returned from an excursion to the top of gray back a noted mountain that stands guard on the north side of san gorge the night on nio pass after spending the peak the party started to return by a different emte on their conmey they caw a canyon about feet deep with perpendicular walls and on peering over the side snow was seen at the bottom going to the head of the canyon they found a place where they could elide down and one by one the party took the risk after eluding eliding several hundred feet they came to a body of ice and snow which they followed down it was nearly a mile in length and from th cracks it was ascertained that the lea was about 25 feet thick by CO feet wide largo boulders bowl ders as big as a house arera lying on top of the ice there was no appearance of the glacier melting and the aun does not reach the bottom of the canyon more than an hour each day that tho glacier possessed motion was proved by the fact that immense rocks were pushed forward ont of their beda by masses of ice and snow the bottom of the cracks waa ot a dirty yellowish color and looked very old there is a stream of water flowing from the lower end probably fed by springs under the glacier and mass of ice which may have been in that canyon for ages by testing the thermometer in boiling water grayback was found to be exactly feet above the aea level water was boiled at begs fahrenheit the camp was some feet below the peak and one of the party on the top tried his voice and shouted in the direction of the camp and who remained below stated that they heard the voice faintly the temperature on the top of tha peak was 89 begs at 4 in the morning but a small lake up thero was frozen and covered with snow california cor chicago tribune |
