public schools thea stand second to none in any city they are so important and so fraught with immediate and far reach ing result that they should enlist the thecial concern f the the gratifying that has attended the efforts of superintendent era in grading and the marked advancement in all the departments during tha pact acro yeara furnish grounds for encouragement along thia line of work the re aults certainly justify the efforts and indicate more rapid progress in the immediate future it has been the arit of tha writer to maka a recent visit to very department and room of the public in our city though but a brief time could be given yet sufficient to obtain a fairly carreca idea of the practical workings of each de it ia not the design of this paper to give a careful critic isai of the public schools of our city nothing fur that in a general way and noting eocene of our observations do not believe in the policy too of ten adopted to wait until toe party dies or goes out of officio bedfor any word of appreciation is given wa do not hesitate t say that considering the disadvantage 01 crowded rooer the overcrowded classes the comparatively preparatory work of grading and reducing to a system excellent work in being done and rapid advances aro being made it is bat just to say that superintendent is pushing the work with commendable zeal and with gratifying results As to the teachers we ware im with their earnest aass and devotion deTO tion to thair work it may be well expressed in the words of one of the teachers we are doing our bast with this spirit 0 devotion and des having mat the necee aary requirements require menta of the examine boar dand with the proper operation cooperation co of the parents cuch teachers cannot fail to succeed AT SCHOOL we fondd about four hundred pupils under the care of six teachers taa chers with mr JB walton as principal we were just in tim for tb opening of the morning session the opening exercises consume acma half hour and ar of a varied and pleasing nature efiem consisting of music songs and after a brief talk by tho principals en some practical subject la order t avoid the confusion of up and dawn the tareo rooms unite in the opening ex while at the name time the threw lower rooms unite in practically tho same after to one recitation by iha courtesy of the principal we were taken to woric room a of the advanced pupils were in saak ing raised maps the work was indeed creditable evidently prof walton has the enlisting the interest of his pupils in their work however it is simaly impossible to do justice either to himself or tho pupils with such overcrowded classes the misses finkleys Find leys are in charge of two room situated on the upper floor and embracing the second third and part of the fourth reader grades evidently they have their hands full for is these departments is found that irre prea sable boy that whistling pins chin explosive boy ao prevalent in public schools he is here for a pur pone but must be controlled but hoir loae somo these teachers would be with out this boy they evidently enjoy their work and are doing good service passing to room presided berer by air and next in grade to that ol 01 the grammar mr foote is at a great disadvantage in having classes passing in and ont of his room Thia necessarily prevents perfect or ler doubtless he is doing the beat possible but certainly could do better under more favorable conditions we found miss pratt in charge of alie first reader grade with her pupils un der excellent control her careful and thorough work will make it easy and plea siut for the teacher who shall take charge of her pupils when aboy past from under her there ie DO more difficult work and certainly none more important or responsible position in the public schools than that of a teacher in the chart the nd board are to be congratulated as well as every parent for haying tired such competent tx churs in t us department a alias lathrop of t e central school ind llis billing of the vest school no other departments of our city schools are conducted with greats skill and than is this by theca two WEST SCHOOL passing to the west we foncil mr billings the apal bu y enough in the room over which he has immediate charge there are about eighty one hupila but he evidently is master of the eum liou and ia boim excellent work the moat noticeable feature was the originality displaced and the ability he shows in leading iha pupils to think and act for notwithstanding the crowded of his room there is maintained alliot perfect miss thatcher is ID charge of the next lower erade aul abao the drawing she tio has eimil ed room but is displaying able zeal the students in this deahr 1 exhibited forue excellent excel leHt work ia raised maps of utah her originality and tact will always bring abc ceria riest DISTRICT passing to the first district we were cordially received by alie principal mr rawlings and his assistant miss anderson here too we found excellent discipline and asmoel perfect order in deed no better government biad been observed in any of ane schools than in this here again the teachers are et a areat disadvantage by reason of the rooms being over crowded there being eighty one in the main room and A fifty cne in the second this renders it impossible to give proper instruction st with the present grading an addi tenal room ia an absolute necessity for satisfactory results in the main we have been more than pleased at what wo havo od aasved aad learned concerning the work slid if schools every teacher jul y realizes that there is fuch to be douw before an ideal egand ard is reached the school board and all alie teach jtb are well award of of the pressing need of larger ac the should fcc impressed with this need there certainly hould be provision for c higher department by the opening of another year chinca should be corrected immediately they may of ant little importance to many but they cannot be ignored and the schools reach the degree of excellence one is he lack of croper ventilation at the central school A little labor and not a lare outlay of money would be health to teachers and life to abo schools another is the failure on the part of parents to visit the schools this ia an unpardonable neglect on injustice to teachers and a violation of aba sacred obligation of parent to child tibia ought not eo to be it need not be we hata hastily written not in the spirit ef aernt critic isBa but irith an desire for the higgett good of our public schools BO dear heart of ayery trap |
