Show OVER FORTY YEARS AGO gome terrible spent money in georgia lii 1849 on the last sunday evening in october 1842 I 1 went over to my fathers who was in rather bad health and found his family physician there to see elm before he left for milledge ville the ensuing week as a legislator say benjamin leigh of newman ga in the Atlanta constitution in course of conversation I 1 mentioned that I 1 was going to start boxt morning with a load ol 01 cotton to at lanta the doctor said to me that he expected that he had a package of awaiting him there and fo me to call on john F milaa the agent of the georgia railroad for it so next morning baing monday I 1 started with my load of seven bales of cotton to atlanta and arrived there on tuesday evening and next mora ing sold my cotton bought what supplies I 1 needed and when ready to start home I 1 walked over to the georgia railroad depot which stood then where the nev one does now stepped into mr minis office which was crowded with waiting for freight from all parts of the compass at least two dozen of them I 1 said to mims dr terrell haa requested me to call on you to see if oa did not have a package for him and if you have send it by me 1 mims answered in the affirmative and stepped back to the safe which he opened and took out the package and as he walked back to me cautioned mo to take good care of it as there waa in it this declaration nearly gave me the horrors as the eyes of every man in the larga room immediately turned on the package and me at first I 1 hardly knew whether to take aitor not but I 1 soon recovered and just then mims asked me how far I 1 lived from bob burch boh before was an old TaUa ferro county friend of mims I 1 replied that ha lived on an adjoining plantation he then said he had for him and asked me if I 1 would carry it to him to which 1 replied in the affirmative he then stepped drawer and ho money to me in keence Ks ence of all present I 1 just that I 1 was in it and that I 1 would carry all the money in atlanta if they repeated me to do so I 1 opened my long calfskin calf skin pocketbook pocket book and put burch s money in it in view of all and put the ten thousand dol lar package in my right hand overcoat pocket 1 left the depot and soon was r f town accompanied by no OK 1 ay old wagoner who knew fotr of the money I 1 had with me I 1 met that day a great many going to atlanta many of whom were from coweta and rome of them my neighbors I 1 reckon f looked back a hundred times to see if any of those who were in the depot at the time a got the money were pursuing me just after sundown I 1 reached a camping place which now is about the western boundary of fairburn the weather was just such as we have had for the last month clear dry and cool with the moon at ita buil As soon as tho mules were and fed my wagoner made a fire and boiled coffee and already having bread brought from home I 1 soon ato my aupper had my pallet made down on the ground which waa always my custom in camping out and soon laid down and got to thinking about the probability of being robbed if not murdered before day there was not a breeze in the forest and a cricket could be heard al most a quarter of a mile and the moon shining almost like day and while yet in this mood I 1 heard a whip crack in the direction of newman I 1 then knew I 1 would have some company through the night directly two heavily loaded wagons with cotton drove up and formed a sort of semicircle semi circle around my campfire camp fire which wag still brilliant you can better imagine than I 1 can describe my relief of minal when I 1 saw two heavy well set colored and their young mastic benninga Jen ninga from tromp I 1 had no further fear of robbery through and I 1 slept well all through the nigh not having any fears of robbery from outside the camp or inside it because I 1 was the only one that knew of the amount of money that was in the camp 1 I got up early next morning and started for at which place I 1 arrived early in the afternoon and delivered my ten thousand allar package according to instructions to batty II 11 mitchell and returned homo four miles before night and next day turned over the to my friend and neighbor burch those wore the good old daya of honesty and security from robbery and murder there is not enough money in the universe to induce me to take that much money now on my person and start for with the same mode of travel |
