Mrs. Ella "Flugg Young, tho first woman to becomo superintendent su-perintendent of schools in a large city, v.ih forced out of her position tonight, when tho board of education had a tie vote on her re-election. Immediately on tho announcement of tho vote Mrs. Young rosigned her position, saying that without tho support of tho board fiho would havo to dcclino to permit her name to go boforo tho board again. John D. Shoop. assistant superintendent, superinten-dent, was elected to succeed Mrs. Young. Dr. Young has mot with constant opposition op-position nnd a few months ago resigned her position because she was not allowed al-lowed to have full swav in educational matters in Chicago. The resignation wos withdraw! at the request of Mayor Harrison, who assured her a free hand in tho future. The opposition to Mrs. Young, however, was not quioted by tho action of tho mayor, and at the first opportunity tho board voted her out of office. The action of tho board wos a shod: to Chicago. Tho fact that tho city had the only woman superintendent had made it'uniquo in educational circles. |
