Show endorse the action of the miners resolutions ADOPTED denouncing an unjust exacting and un american system and condition correspondence EUREKA april 6 AB outlined in my previous letters the miners of the dis brict hare made a most rigorous kick against the unjust method of coercing them into boarding and trading with the companies amass meeting of the citizens of eureka was held last ev enins sunday ath at the 1 OF hull for the purpose of endorsing the union in the effort to the miners from an unjust thralldom the hall wag crowded hundreds could not gain admittance speeches were made by alveral prominent citizens such as james P diieno the popular poat maiter judge C D brown judge C M mr and others mr driscoll having been appointed chairman of the meeting A committee on resolutions was ap pointed con of C EB and frank hunter ahil e the committee was in bession several prominent citizens ventilated their ideas as to their judgement jud gement on alie conduct of the companies the main feature of the speakers was a denunciation of the tribune and kotlier utah papers in the stand or non committal attitude assumed by them the following resolutions which were unanimously adopted explain themselves and the object and purposes of the mee eureka has grown to be a large town having a number of hotels restaurants boarding houses and stores and others being provided so that all can conveniently find places to board and trade and WHEREAS the officers of the leading mining compi inies at eureka and ivicin ity maintain and run boarding houses and stores at which their employed emp loyes are compelled to board and trade at the hazard of their positions to the great detriment of said employed emp loyes and the entire community and WHEREAS the miners union of eureka have taken steps to remove aliis unjust exacting and un american system and condition therefore be it lie solved by the citizens of eureka in this mass meeting assembled first that we congratulate the miners union upon the gentlemanly and orderly manner in which their protest has been made second that we recognize their cause as just and their demand as honorable third that wo recognize that mutual obligations exist between capital and labor that they are dependent on each other but when a man performs his labor faithfully and well he is entitled to the agreed equivalent for his labor that it then is his own to do with as he pleases in an open market without let or hindrance fourth that any submission to compulsory extortion by which a man is obliged to accept less for his money than an active competition in trade would yield is unworthy of an american fifth relief from a compel that relief from a compulsion to board or trade at any officers boarding house and store is the duty of every self respecting intelligent miner sixth that alie expenditure of the miners board money among the will enhance the comforts of the and improve the quality and character ot their homes seventh that the other expenses of living and diversion thrown upon an open market will transform the aspect of the town by increasing its population and and enterprising commer cial class who by knowledge of busi and active competition will enable the turner to get the most for bis money eighth any attempt of an officer high or low ot any mining or other corporation to deny the miner free and independent us of his own is aug an american and shows a grasping and spirit to which he should not ninth that we openly express our satisfaction at the operation cooperation co and friendly attitude ot mr packard in the present issue s tenth that we express our surprise at the silence ot the eureka ceef and its failure to voice the sentiments of tha miners and citizens of eureka upon the question which occupies our attention at thi time eleventh that we the citizens of eureka do join hands with the miners union in the laudable efforts of the of the mines the miners to assert their manhood and americanism and will aid and assist them morally and financially aa long aa they continue in a peaceable law abiding agitation twelfth that a copy of aliese resola eions be forwarded to the secretary of tha different diff trent mining companies the of the miners union the bialt lake times and herald and the provo C L brown F E bostwick Boa and frank hunter committee FRANK BURK |
