Members of tho senate were- called upon yesterday to choose between two designs of a proposed stato flag for Utah. One flag was designed by the Sons f the American Revolution and the ?rVie1r y thc Sons a"d Daughters of tho Utah Ploneors. Tho first was presented to Xjtah when It was admitted to tho union and made the state flag by a resolution adopted by the legislature two years ago. Tho other was designed recently by tho Sons and Daughters of the Ploneors. who desire that it be made tho state flag of Utah In order that It may be presented by them to tho battleship bat-tleship Utah. The question camo up on the consideration consid-eration of a resolution by Mrs. Annie wells Cannon which had passed the house. Senator D. O. RIdeout urjgM that tho resolution be adopted in ordor that the flag might be exhibited at the ball to bo given tonight bv the Sons and Daughters of tho Pioneers. The two flags were then exhibited. The difference differ-ence is principally in colore. Tho present pres-ent official flag has tho state sea In white on a bluo background, while the one which Is proposed as a substitute has a highly colored seal on a blue background. Senator Mont Ferry said that ho understood the state flag had already been presented to tho battleship and he thought It wouldn't bo wise to change tho design. Jf Utah substituted the flag of tho Sons and Daughters of tho Pioneers Pio-neers now, lie believed it possible that two years from now the Indian war veterans vet-erans might submit still another design and ask that It bo mado tho state flag of Utah. President Gardner said he believed be-lieved the difference in colors to be due to a mistako of tho manufacturers of tho flag' shown and the resolution was asked in order to make tho state flag conform to tho design made by tho manufacturers. Finally, on motion of Senator CottrcII, the resolution was referred re-ferred back to the committee on state affairs and feredal relations. |
