Show M mm the bloody scenes enacted at new orleans last saturday ia truly shocking to all liberty loving citizens one can hardly believe that tn one of the chief cities over which floats the stars and stripes respected citizens would lead ia riotous mob to the prisons cells and anere shoot down eleven men who had been duly tried by a jury ana found nut guilty it seems like asking foreigners to obey our laws and respect our courts while we ourselves disregard them and re turn to savage ways this was done at the city named last friday and the lunching lynching lyn ching may lead to serious international ter complications the facts that lead to tho perpetration of the foul acts are these on octo berl about 11 at night as D U HEN ESSET the chief of police of tho city of new orleans was going from his office to his home lie was waylaid and shot to pieces by a band of italian assassins armed with such blunderbusses blunder busses as could only have been made and used for the purpose of assassination A number of italian ruffians were arrested and brought before the courts the very best lawyers were employed to prosecute them but a bad jury system could not seemingly secure men that dared convicted it was known that italians are banded together in a secret organization and it is claimed that danger lurked in the pathway of jury men who would be bold enough to convict tho ruffians implicated after a very thorough trial lasting t wenty UTO days the jury brought in a verdict of acquittal in the cas e of six tasi action so excited the citizens of tho crescent city that a public meeting was advertised and the notice circulated generally on tho street the citizens wore told in the notice to come prepared for action and they did so an arsenal had been established and after fiery speeches by prominent citizens had been made at the meeting the mob composed of several th busand men proceeded armea to the jail where acho were confined and fairly riddled the bodies of the prisoners with bullets no doubt some of the foreign vil liaos were guilty and it is just as probable that some murdered were not guilty the lynch law is a very uncertain mode of meting out justice and it tends to harden the human nature so that it knows no bounds if the italians are blamed of another killing in new orleans as ahny are bable to bo quite likely the mob will march on the and shoot them down without hesitation ara regard for innocence |
