| Show SUGAR FREE OF on and after the first of april all sugar not above no 16 dutch standard in color will be admitted free of duty in the united states the present duty is two cents per pound and after the date mentioned the sugar largely used for family use will be free from tariff restrictions in anticipation of this many merchants in the west have let their supply of sugar run low the law provided that after the first of this month sugar could be received at the ports in bond to be inspected after the first of april all merchants were anxious to ship before that date however and the treasury department have therefore issued the following order so much of article 4 of department circular of january 29 1891 as relates to the shipment and delivery of sugars in bonded cars is hereby amended so as to read as follow a sugar may with the consent of the transportation company be held at the port of delivery or forwarded to and held at any railway station in bonded card at the of the collector or surveyor of customs to whom they are consigned such sugars may be delivered under the supervision ot an officer of the customs on and after april at any railway stati n within the district to whom the same are consigned upon a permit of such rol lector to be issued on withdrawal entry or at a railway station not within any collection district upon a permit from the collector or surveyor of customs to whom they are consigned nearest such railway station collectors of customs at ports from which sugars are shipped destined for places other than ports of entry or delivery will send the transportation por tation papers to the collector or surveyor to whom the same are assigned collectors and surveyors of customs are hereby authorized to nominate for appointment such number of temporary inspectors as may be necessary nece to de liver such sugars provided that in each cae the parties asking for a delivery of sugars from railway cars stipulate in writing to pay aud shall depose a sufficient amount for the compensation of the inspector at the rate of 3 per diem and to defray his expenses in po ing to and returning from the point where alie delivery of such sugars may take place 0 L SPAULDING acting secretary merchants taking advantage of this provision will be enabled to place chaap sugar on our market to bo sold as soon as the tariff law goes into effect oyer barrels of sugar have already been shipped to the new york port and it is expected that this essential of housekeeping house keeping will be much cheaper than heretofore |
