Show HDA POTASH IS SUBJECTJF REPORT Valuable Mineral Is Showing in Sagebrush State in Good Quantity. Nltruto of noda and nltrato of potash wore Imported Into the United States In it'll to the valuo of $17,117,008, according accord-ing to the buieun of HtutlutlcH. Nearly nil llni nltratu Imported comeu from Chllo nnd Ik used for fertilizing. Thla enormous expenditure for Imported ni-tnitos ni-tnitos lends Interest to a pamphlet, just IsHuod by the United Stales geological survey, "Nitrate Deposits," by Uoyt 3 Galo (bulletin 523). All the known occurrences of nitrate deposits in the United Stutos are described de-scribed -by Mr. Gale, and though most of these are probably In the nature of "prospects," they are Interesting and of Importance as Indicating the possible origin of deposltH which can be mined commercially. Last year George Otis Smith, director of the survey, and A. FT. Brooks, In company with Mr. Gale, visited a reported deposit near Gerlach, Nov.. where specimens of salts running high In potassium nitrate wore obtained. Reference Is made in tho bulletin to areas in most of tho western states where discoveries of these nitrates have born reported from time to time. The extreme solubility of nitrate salts renders It unlikely that concentrated do-1 posits will remain anywhore except In plnccs either not subject to or protected protect-ed from the solvent action of rain, surface sur-face water or moving ground water. Thus nitrate salts arc found chiefly In caverns or caves, or under overhanging lodges, or, as in the Chilean and other South American occurrences, in a region of exceptional aridity. The assertion that none of Ihe nitrate ni-trate deposits of the character mentioned will prove commercially workable is, ac-cordlnc ac-cordlnc to Mr. Gale, not warranted. Such deposits have proved to be of value under un-der exceptional conditions, as when they were utilized for the manufacture of gunpowder, gun-powder, during war times, In the eastern states; and It le entirely posnlblo that changing conditions may render somo of the western deposits valuable. It must bo recognized, however, that so far ns may he Judged from preRont evldenre, few If any nf the deposits now known warrant much, on tiny for development as a source of commercial nltrato Halts. A copy of the report may be obtained free on application to tho director of the geological survey. Washington, D. C New York Mining Stocks. James A. Pollock &.
