communications theal M B co represented that they had complied with the order of the council in filling up their race on I 1 street and that they would have no further use for their tail race on J street and would relinquish all rights thereto committee on streets and alleys the city called attention to the existence of certain water irregularities lari ties and egils the streets were con tt antly being flooded brush was thrown into the ditches the water sects on business streets were cloi eed and were no provisions for the controlling of water from artesian wells he asked that some action be taken to these irregularities and evils committees on irrigation and judiciary ludi ciary the city also reported that more water was required in city cheok owing to the irrigation of land recently placed under cultivation etc and asked that he be instructed to re pair enlarge and make certain improve ments on said city creek committee on irrigation with authority to act EFFORTS OF committees L S glazier chairman of the committee on streets and alleys recommended that tho nuisance on thirteenth and E streets bo abit ed and that mr tanner be requested to deed to the city a strip of ground 2 rods in width at that place a albeet haying been declared open some of the councillors councilors counci lors were of tho opinion that it was the duty of a few persons who would ba directly benefit led to abate the nuisance the matter was to the committee for further consideration the committee on police and cita prison re potted on the petition of peter stubbs et al recommending that silas allred be again employed as special policeman at the depot the report wag adopted the same committee reported that they had found the claim ot sang lee for feeding the city during the month of anne amounting to boog to be correct and recommended the same be anid adopted the same committee reported as fol lows to the mayor and calv council city GENTLEMEN four committee on police and city prison to whom was referred the complaint sang lee for feeding prisoners food not fit to be eaten report that we haye considered the same and have seen some of the food brought by the said sang lae which fihs ihs prisoners refused to oat be 0 cause the mt at was tainted and the beans sour and we considered it until for any person to eat we would therefore le commend that the contract for fee diner city prisoners entered into with said banglee bd rescinded and that said contract be awarded to B M roberts arat his bid of 17 cents oer meal samuel liddiard chairman mr maiben was opposed to awarding the contract to any one antil new bids had been solicited and all given an opportunity to bid mr liddiard thought it was rouble under the circumstances to award the contract to mr roberta that gentleman had been the next loleat bidder and there had been no change bince he had offered his bid mr henrichsen Henric hBen supported the last speaker in relation to mr roberta bid he was prepare J to vote tor the report on principle tle main point with him was that the contract should be awarded to a man who was a citizen although lie was of the opinion that the furnish ing of bad food was cause for a change glazier did not consider it necessary to receive bids a second time the report was adopted CLAIM the claim of william H king for services as city attorney for the ending june 31 was presented and allowed the bill to repeal an ordinance entitled an ordinance to prevent certain minors from being on the streets after certain hours passed its second read ins and was filed for third reading A bill providing for an amendment amend mant of an ordinance entitled an ordinance to provide for the erection of signs awn caps and balconies wa tadeu up and passed its third reading the bill was passed by a unanimous vote and the title of the bill made the title of the ordinance A substitute bill providing for tha in of buildings and other structures was considered and it was ordered that the recorder be instructed to furnish the members with perfected copies miscellaneous BUSINESS mr glazier introduced a resolution was amended and adopted as follows be it resolved by the city council of provo city that for the present year the supervisor of streets for provo city is hereby authorized to receipt at the rate of 20 cents per hour for a man and 40 centi per hour for a man and team for work dono on the fit in payment of city taxes assessed ass eseed for opening improving and keeping m re pair the streets of provo city That resolution ahall net be in force after the day of november 1891 without special order of the council mr daun moved that a nuisance nui dance on fifth street between F and G streets c jn of a cesspool ba abated by the road supervisor mr glazier moved to amend by striking out road supervisor and in berting in lieu thereof masier the had created the nuisance and he should repair it mr liddiard thought that the two officers should work together and see eye t eye it seemed to him like the two officers and the chairman of the committee on streets and alleys were a kind of a three cornered affair they all wort ed indifferent directions mr liddiard illustrated his remarks by paralleling and crossing his fingers as occasion required mr maiben said alie cesspool had been made two bears ago and therefore tue presed t had nothing to do with it it looked to him like builds play to say now you done this and you have got to fix it it was the business of the supervisor to repair the streets and it was nonsense to hoid the present apter responsible foi something done by some twenty years ago mr glazier the present made the cesspool while he was deputy mr maiben than ha did it under the direction of his principal the amendment was lost and the original notion was carried mr that the supervisor be instructed to clear J street of flome of the larger cobble stones carried mr liddiard moved that the supervisor be instructed to take steps for the protection of monument stones recen ly placed in position by the surveyor carried mr glazier moved that twelfth street between E and H streets be graded and graveled lost the majority of the council being of the opinion that the supervisor already had more to do than he could attend to for some time to come council adjourned |
