Show our tells yon low LAY OF THE COUNTRY the various mormon settlements the railroad being built work EsQ mEEK when one has fully determined upon coming to mexico acme preparation is necessary and a few suggestions as to how and when to come and where to locate be of use a people in a new country with an entirely different climate changed conditions are imposed and the details should be attended to before leading home perhaps the first consideration is how to make the trip several families have come by team iu the last year from arizona rutih and idalio and the results have been in many instances quite disastrous cattle aad have died or have been left on the way while the women and children have endured several hardships after all too the outlay in cash has amounted to nearly as much in most cases as it would i have cost to come by rail and iu some instances the cost has been more it is I 1 therefore believed to be the beat and cheapest to come to deming new mexico by train A freight train may be chartered at anden or any intermediate point for in which the harness wagons furniture and machinery of three or four ordinary families may be while a of fifteen or twenty will be a car ato themselves upon purchasing at 35 each through tickets to deming on either mhd D 11 G or U t lines the best time to come is perhaps the nest question if one leaves utah or idaho just at the close of winter the change in climate may give some discomfort but if the trip is made at the close bof october or in the middle of november the cold weather of the north will be escaped and the settler will be here in time to put in a crop for harvesting the nest spring As cattle run out the year round no beara will be entertained about hay for stock before starting however one should make some preparations to meet the commercial conditions of the country all the clothing the family will need for two years should be bought and made up As much dried fruit as possible should be on hand and where possible horses should ba traded for mares or mules especially when alie intended colonist has more stock than he will be allowed to take into the country free of duty arrived in deming after a three days trip one should taka rooms at the st james hotel or he may find house room about town or rooms over tho bank or yet bitch up and drive outside of town to feed where the family may rest and determine upon the next step to take where tho home will be made depends measurably upon the occupation one wishes 10 take up with a variety heie presented quite equal to anything one would expect in a new coultry next therefore as to the settlements forty miles south of deming is pralo mas built on lands owned by hon J V youn four and a half miles south of the international line in the free zone of mexico palomas will bo the tha location of the custode house for all the mormon settlements south there is a swell ot ground at atie line and from this llie plain lias almost a level sweep for sixteen miles to the casas grandpa river skirted on tho west by low hills at the eastern foot ot which the settlement is built just below the rail way track the prairie is bounded on the east about twenty miles from alie settlement by a range of low steep looking mountains about half a mile south of alie line and two miles east of the track there is a large spring one hundred and fifty feet wide by two hundred feet lonz flowing per laps teet water oer minute from this spring to the lake four miles south about a mile and a quarter align ly of east of town there are twenty ilaryi springs whose outlet is the common stream flowing into the lake of quarters of a mile wide by two and a half miles long from the upper spring the water way will be conducted to the wet onto the greater part of abo land below the track in fact a canal has already been cut for a mile and a half by the resident mexicans but is now abandoned besides these springs there are two more rising at the foot of the hill on the west just below town one of these however is on private property and the other on the plaza or public square the greater part of alie soil contains considerable mineral there bring perhaps nor over two acres irom sala ralus but as there wll ba an abundance of water the boil may be reclaimed in time but palomas will be less a farming or cattle raising district than a commercial and manufacturing locality though there are hundreds cf cattle ranging on the plains hero now and feed for thousands more all tho beir through sixty five miles directly south of palomas is the next mormon settlement of diaz after passing through the boca grande mountains a range extending east and west across the plain one going south has before him a forty eight miles stretch of level plain from twelve to twenty four miles wide in the midst of which thirty two miles distant Is diaz the main water supply of the tofu especially during the dry season spring from the low hills on the west however a large canal ia being taken from the casas grandes river in which water can be had in abundance lor eight months of the year the soil at diaz is deep and being adapted ea pec fally to the raising of fruit and grain the entire expanse of plain land is covered the yei r round with an abundance oF grass the tract of land en which diaz is located ia of an area of acres and iii owned y the mexican colonization and agricultural company anyone wishing to loc lie on the lands of thi s company either at diaz juarez or pacheca should obtain a recommend from the authorities of his ward pre this recommend to the mexican counsil in deming and afterwards to manager alexander F mcdonald or assistant secretary henry L eying of juarez he will receive all the brivil edge of a colonist under the companas comp anys regulations at either one of these settlements a colonist will be given a cily lot and if dea ireda piece of farming land without urice he will however be required to pay a nominal rental BO that the title to the land will not pass tu him by prescription so long as a settler complies with the rules of the company como any the lot or land used by him will remain in his hands exclusively but if those rules are transgressed he will be paid a fair price the amount to be determined upon by arbitration for his improvements and will be required to vacate the premises the manner of holding lands adopted by the under the laws of mexico may seem peculiar to some but if the matter is well understood it will be found t afford greater advantages socially and politically than any other mr alexander F mcd bald manager of the company permits your correspondent to say that he will be pleased to answer any communication relating to the lands ot the company or their rules
