june to the board in reviewing the of the public schools of our city for the year ending juno it is pleasant to indulge in the belief that there has been a aheady advancement on tho line already established and that cur schools are on a higher level than ever before it will be especially profitable to note the operations of the free school law during this its first year the schools opened sept ast 1st with ten teachers but it was soon found that the greatly increased attendance over previous years required additional instructors tors and after the first week dur gnp th first term twelve teachers were engaged the second term thirteen and the third term fourteen the fourth term haa not seen so largo an attendance twelve teachers were employed the first half of the term and eleven the last avo weeks the teachers who have been employed during the whole year are as follows G H brimhall W W billings ella lareon W S rawlings evlyn billings J B walton mary nu atau and emma thatcher engaged for shorter periods aro alice findley susie brown ella cauff celestia kash mrs grace anderaon nicholas wilson and J B moreton prof H E giles has given regular courses of music in all except the two north schools for three terms of the year the teachers have labored carmoni bonaly and incessantly for the welfare of the schools at the beginning ot the year each was furnished with a record in which the plan for each term was entered the plans being uniform for the same grade throughout the district and all within the lines marked out in the outlined course of instruction adopted by the utah county teachers Ap socia lion the majority of the teachers have also kept daily reference notes planning each lerson regular weekly meetings of th teachers have bean held when plans methods and mattera of discipline were discussed in the early part of the year the of psychology was taken up as a regular study in the meetings but eaon the services of professor cluff were engaged to give courses in and psychology most ot the teachers availed themselves of this course and have been meeting twice a week besides the regular association meetings above referred to the teachers with one or two bious have been active bembera ot the utah county teachers association the increased strength and life the teachers derived from these frequent gatherings and consultations and from the courses of aiudi mentioned have bad their immediate effect for good in be during the first term there were five primary schools four intermediate two grammar and one mixed second term five primary four intermediate two grammar and two mixed third term five primary five intermediate two grammar spid two mixed fourth term five primary four intermediate tap twp grammar and one mixed the of hupila enrolled in a 1 l the schools for each of the four terms is B follows fiest term second term third term fourth term for a complete statement of the proportion of mormon and non the average length of time of attendance the number over and under age etc rf crenco is made to the statistical report for the year BRANCHES TAUGHT the subjects of reading spelling language lessons grammar geography history arithmetic physiology and hygiene and morals and manners have been regularly taught in all grades where pupils were advanced to pursue the same lessons have also been given in some 0 schools during a whole or portion of the year in music object lessons elyj ical culture algebra general history and natural philosophy in principles and matter presented there has been a complete uniformity in similar grades but in method there was more latitude in other words while all teachers of any given grade worked to the same plan exactly the individuality of the te was man tested in various methods all aiming at the same end AND CABINET the district library at the central school house and the smaller collections of books at the other schools have been used with advantage by pupils ann teachers the current numbers of youths treasure and heme and school visitor were especially interesting and profitable to the schools small collections of specimens from the kingdom of nature are found in each school and th s are us d in presenting numbers and object lessons in fact object teai liia is made alie basic work of all BO far as practicable the general forward tendency of education in our city has been accelerated by your ee nerous action in fitting up the rooms with the best of furniture by adding to teachers apparatus by providing for beautifying the school houses and grounds in decorating alie walls of the schoolrooms with pictures historical and geographical and tha grounds with trees and shrubs these things will not only render the homes of the little learners more attractive and home like but will invite the minds of tha pupils into paths of useful snow ledge the percentage of attendance over previous years baa been considerable this ia due in some degree to the growth of our population but in a greater extent is it attributable to tree the enrollment has been especial y large in the lower grades though thu average attendance has not been quite go good proportionally this latter fact may ba accounted for when we consider the prevalence of contagion and disease in our city during tha past year not only have the ranks of the pupils been invaded but several of the teachers have been attacked as well and the progress of ane schools haa been thereby considerably hindered BOOM aora seating capacity is heeded to accommodate all of school age who may desire to attend tha schools in the northwestern part of the chiy a school house of about three departments ia an urgent necessity while the east school house or that of the first ward should be en lareed as it is no pupils of the fourth and fifth reader grades are admitted there and still many of the lower grades have been denied admittance or want of room alie third floor of the central housa should be completed so there might be a gathering place for the schools now our closing exercise and school entertainments must be held separately which detracts from the influence of alie school work in doping allow me to express to the board my gratitude for their abe enores in aba elevation of education and for their uniform kindness to me and to indulge the hope that our educational interests may auve tie beat attention of the best men and affo nen of our community to the end mat knowl edeo may bo made nearer universal and the people correspondingly more happy E A city sapt the report was
