Show r FESTIVAL it was a ALL WERE electric ekht music and enthusiasm go to make a grand affair the festival it was certainly a brilliant success at 8 on saturday evening the stake tabernacle was illuminated with the electric licht and was filled with a large intelligent and music loving audience the opening piece of alio pro gramme was tue star spangled banner rendered by the combined bands orchestra and full chorus the idea of starting an evenings entertainment with a great national piece is a new cue and a good one it gives life and zip to the performance prof giles should continue this mode of proceed ure A io i was rendered by the payson band under the leadership of professor brimhall payson has cause to foel proud of her band it is very evenly balanced and does the town credit the selection was a trifle ion but vell rendered considering the facts that the members of the chorus came from BO many diffie rent localities and in consequence had not had one rehearsal where all were present they did remarkably well they did their best work in connection with mrs hullin land of the trumpet and spear the tenors and bas escame cut in fina style the finale was round and clear and an encore followed may day was tendered in a nice tripping spar ding manner blessed are the men is a very difficult piece but was fairly well presented the rendition of blessed be thou was in full deep and sonorous eon orous tones of the members of the chorus could not see or did not watch conductor giles closely and missed the time in one or two places in consequence the general rendition however was grand the chorus numbered over two hum red the fourth ward glee club consisting of 27 members presented invocation to harmony the accent and phrasing was well marked and the pianos and fortes blended nicely the club stands a very fair chance of capturing the prize at the Y M M I 1 A festival in salt lake for which they will compete 0 world so wondrous fair is tho heaviest piece yet attempted by the boshard and pyne brothers quartette it is full of nice rich harmony and the quartette received a hearty encore A bouquet was thrown to them R C eafton great tenor einger made his first appearance in utah valley it is perhaps superfluous super flous to state that he a triumph he pearel ap twice and each time received a double encore he rendered roses underneath the snow annie laurie remember member Ee me and april showers mrs M C hull is a great favorite in provo she sang twice and each time received u recall by request ehe sang the last rose of summer miss janra lanra webbs rendition of the lover and the bird was superb the second piece she did not sing in quite such eod style prof W C olive in liis violin BOIO at once captured the audience he has wonderful execution and power alie delicate passages were most aweetia rendered of course he was encored prof john held is well known as a cornet soloist suffice to say that his execution and power is marvelous recall mr ed bisou our popular home artist did some fine work in a tongue polka and received a recall misa dora davia the boera house pianist played a difficult operatic selection and was encored the opera house orchestra did good work throughout in their accompaniments the audience throughout were very enthusiastic in consequence of the numerous recalls the pro gramme was quite lengthy an organ would have been of great assistance in the choruses professor giles has worked hard to make a success of the festival artistically and the managing committee J R boshard R R irvine and william buckley have been zealous in th matter of finances they succeeded beyond their anticipations we must not forget to give due credit to prof james E daniels and the other old choir leaders of the stake who have worked zealously for so ganv years in raising ocr musical standard to its present level the fol lowing choir leaders haye taken an active part in preparing for the festival owen J rowe spanish fork avrum brimhall payson B N walter pleasant grove george harrison springville Spring ville D 0 strong alpine and J L gibb lehi |
