concerned it proved itself a prosperous period and the amount of business transacted through the year has caused the opening of 1888 to be encouraging considering our excellent facilities our limitless resources and the many advantages enjoyed from a commercial point of view this city cannot help but be a veritable commonwealth situated on one of the finest rivers in the territory the county seat of utah cannot help but prove itself in time to be a grand industrial centre provo is called tha garden city of utah and its picturesque distinguished name is very fitly applied visitors upon the scene during the summer season are enchanted with the beauties of utah valley and the rare appearance of the county town but not alone for its beautiful astion eit and garden like character is provo city distinguished in our territorial history it nas a very important status in an indans trial point of view derived from its woolen mills and is the seat of education for students from all parts of the territory both north and south and also from other territories while in historical rank it being the judicial seat of the first district court it is second only to salt lake city out in the matter of territorial rit orial industries is tha large works ortho WOOLEN MILLS the dime naiona of the main build ing are x 65 feet it is a four story rock building bui iding with a half mansard roof covered with tin roofing it has a projecting stairway surmounted by a tower 30 feet above the roof the upper story is used for the storing and preparing of the wool for the cards on the floor below there aro eight sets of cards and one band mule of spindles two reels and two the next floor below is the spinning room containing four belf acting mules of spindles each the ground floor contains nineteen inroad and 38 narrow looms 2 wrappers and dressers 1 shawl fringer one frame and 1 merand bea a machine for a double and kwiat stocking yarn of 62 spindles the finishing house is built of adobe 70 x 30 foot two and a half stories high on the first floor are three wa three fr illera two large screw presses two giga one cloth measure and ona hard waste picker the factory is ran by water power with two leffell turbine wheels one thirty six and the other forty four inches the factory has a rotary pump which is in operation immediately south of the main building is situated a two and a half story adobe building 33 z feet the upper room is used for the receiving ce and assorting of wool and the lower story for an office salesroom carpenters shop and drying broom attached to this building on ane east sida is a one story frama house 30 x 60 feet which ia used for the dye house and wool scouring acou ring connected with the factory was quite a large floering flouring flou ring mill but which was burned down in the spring of 1879 involving a loss of ten thousand dollars the factory employs on an average from to operatives who were mostly trained iu the large tories of england and scotland the company finds a market for their goods in every town and village of utah besides exporting some into montana idaho and Colorado Among its complete variety of goods it manufactures about three thousand pair of blankets per year which will compete with the same class of goods manufactured either east or west tha amount of goods manufactured per annum is the wool purchases amount to about a million pounds out of which the factory manufactures between three and four thousand pounds therom pany haa done a great deal of whole trade the value of the goods turned out by the mills during the last year has reached the sum of worth of hai been shipped out of utah about pounds of wool have beau bought during this period at least haada have found employment the amount of money paid out for this labor reached the sum of of the building is valued at mr aeed smoot the present au perin was superintendent of the provo cooperative co operative institution for three and one half years previous to his appointment over the factory mr J K the decre tary and treasurer has been connected with the factory for the last thirteen years another of important man factories is the L M B CO this company is the outgrowth of quite a small business bebau in january 1878 by smoot john co the present organization organisation was effected with a capital of on the of april 1879 ninety per cent of the capital is at present date paid in the companas comp anys aro opposite the railway depots of the utah central and denver rio grande they are about 50 x feet the yards are extensive for the storing of inhaber Ina aber and the establishment is well applied with the latest improved machinery their extensive lumber iliade throughout throng hout the Bont harn conn try the new District completed will ba the finest in the territory visitors to provo cannot help expressing astonishment at tbt building known as tho UTAH STAKE tabernacle at a quarterly conference of B stake held in provo city september and ad H H cluff jp K johnson and J C snyder were appointed a building committee some material was collected td ground during tha fall ench as rock brick and lumber during the summer of 1883 the walla were ran up to the square and covered for protection during winter storms the whole building acovera an area cf feet extending east and west by 88 feet in width with four octagon corners the brick walls of these octagon corners extend one story above abo roof and each support a tower 88 feet high from the ground the center tower is supported by roof on three main trusses red i feet high from the ground the main entrance is at the east end but there are spacious entrances through a ves tible at each side of the building and two doorways door ways in the west end thus providing for good ingress and egress another commendable feature is connected with this structure that is the entrances to and from the galleries which is by a circular flight of at each octagon corner and entirely independent from tha body of the building the auditorium is feet with raised seats extending from the front stand to the east end of the building There are three stands ranging one above the other an in the rear of these stands will be the organ and seating capacity for a large choir there is ono gallery on both sides and one end tf laping a seating capacity for persons the entire cost of the building when finished including organ nd beating furnace will be about INSANE the legislative assembly of 1880 provided tor the erection of the asylum and this magnificent structure was formally opened on july air john H burton who was shot and killed last summer in salt lake city by A EL maram was ho architect he having visited at tae suggestion of the in their work having to turn away an order for any work in the line of iron or brass and not often having failed in bleir efforts to to make machinery or castings the business done by he foundry during the last year amounted to the bands employed amounted to six and considering the institution has commenced a wagon and carriage department there will of necessity have to be mora labor procured the outlook for the foundry is very encouraging and considering the fine work executed by it recently it cannot help bat receive the support of the community during the pas year in tho way of very from figures carefully compiled by the leading bubines men we earn that pounds of butter leave been handled during that period doas of effes pounds of potatoes pounds of wheat pounds of oats barley from these figures it will be readily seen the amount of business done by provo in one year I 1 in these departments ly all the potatoes were shipped into eastern markets merchandise ETC about pounds of merchandise have been sold in provo during the last twelve months at an estimated value of the freight paid on this amount has reached the enormous sum of 53 while on this subject we might refer to the fact that an extensive shipping business is done by mr S S jones of this city in his charcoal business his M M kalns kilns being situated flout four miles above fork station on the D R Q his freight bills on charcoal which are all prepaid reached last year we desired to present in connection with this article a summary of the furniture business done last year but taylar bros have been tho only firm who ha has s 0 favored us with statistics the sales of this firm reached 15 00 last year about of which was for goods outside of provo this firm paid out for freight alone during that period THE BUSINESS OUTLOOK with all the many ups and downs in business last year not one failure was witnessed in this city this speaks well for provo it demonstrates the fact that though there has not been
