Show THREE MEN BORROW COAL FROM S II Ne.ces.-ily is said to be the mother of invention, and apparently it. sometimes la parent to Inspiration. In tills particular par-ticular instance the cold weather crcaled a necessity for coal, and this 1n turn suggested a means by which ;o obtain a supply of the fuel. About 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon a Denver & Rio Orande freight train paired out of the yards, bound toward Ocden. At South Temple and Slxlh West streets Is tho Salt Lake Route crossing, whore all trains on both lines are required to stop ami give warning in the interest of safety. The northbound freight train referred lo obseivcd this rule and consequently con-sequently was only beginning to gel up speed as II reached North Temple street. As further tending to keep down the j speed of the train momentarily," time Is given tho rear brakeman to turn a switch and then make a running catch of the eabooso. While all this was going on. a. couple of young men were seen to jump on to two of the steel cars, loaded with coal, on top ofjwhlch wore some great lumps ot the fuel. When these C3rs reached North Temple street the young fellows began vigorously to heave off a lot of the big lumps. They worked rapidly and must have thrown oft six or seven hundred pounds of coal before, jumping off the-train, which by that time had begun to gather speed. It was all done so quickly that had the trainmen observed ob-served the theft they could not have prevented it. And even If thoy had made an effort to do this It would have heen necessary to atop and hold the freight train, contrary to orders. As 11 was, the young fellows were successful suc-cessful In securing a fair supply of coal without evpenso. except to conscience. A third man was on the ground waiting for the coal, and the three hastily picked up (lie big lumps and carried them Into a coalshed nearby. It required several trips on tho part of the three nion lo stow the fuel away. 11 was plain that tho plan had been concocted beforehand before-hand between the three. a every detail In the act worked In perfect precision and with effective rapidity. |
