Show COTTON MARKET IS STRONGAND ACTIVE General Covering by Shorts the Feature of the Past Week in New Vork. By Leaaeid Wire to The Tribune. SEW VORK Sept. 3. The cotton market, mar-ket, has Ehown considerable actlvitv and strength of an unexpected character throughout the week. This has been particularly par-ticularly the feature of trade during the last two days. Covering of shorts has ben general, with a former leading southern bear operator covering a large line and doubling up on the bull side on the circulation of sensational crop damagn reports. This buying. In connection con-nection with renewed activity Ty some of the former leading local bull operators, has been the feature of the strength the market has shown, with the better demand and larsrer volume of business reported re-ported In spot cotton at Liverpool. From the extreme low levels of early !n the week prices are up 25 to 46 points for the general option list, and about. 25 to 30 points from last Saturday's closing, clos-ing, with the highest point reached during the forenoon yesterday. The New Orleans Or-leans and Liverpool markets have fluctuated In a similar manner and prices for spot. oottOO jn the principal southern south-ern markets have advanced about $1.23 per bale In sympathy. The movement of the crop as figured by the New Orleans cotton exchange shows that over 197,!lOo bales came Into sight this week, against 122,573 for this week last year, and 184,000 In 1909 and 147, "00 In 1908. Total stocks now at. the Interior towns show nn Increase from September 1 of 21,073 ba.les, against 7882 last year. This authority figures out a decrease In the total world's visible supply sup-ply of nil kinds for the week of 20,271 bales, a-galnst a decrease of fio.lSl for this we-ek la-st year, and makes the present pres-ent total visible supply of all kinds 1.57",-fi7 1.57",-fi7 bales, against 1,418.998 last year, of Which S42.967 bales are American cotton, cot-ton, against 829,238 last week and 7ti7.998 last year. The present total supply of American cotton at Liverpool of only 183.000 bales Is the smallest for some years past, and explains the sharp advance In the price of middling cotton and September contracts con-tracts In that market during the last week. These sto.-ks will soon be heavily Increased from the shipments from our southern ports of over 1K0.O0" bales during dur-ing the Inst two weeks, most of which are due to arrive between now and the next ten days.
