Show BELIEVES MAN DIED OF PTilE POISON Friends of Miss Lucille Clerk Say Theory of Suicide Is Absurd. SANTA BARBARA, Cal.. Fob. 2u. Francis Fly of London, England, who. with Mrs. Fry has bceu in Santa Barbara Bar-bara since October, said tonight that Miss Lucillo Clerk, the young woman who was found dead Thursday morning iu her rooms at the Grenoble hotel in New Vork, came to tho United States with them in September, last. Miss Clerk, he said, was a friend of Mrs. Fry and upon learning they were com ing to America expressed a Tfish to come silso. "l-paid her passage, ', said Mr. FYy. "and also her expenses while she remained re-mained with us iu New York, because sho was not possessed of much money. She had been companion on the continent conti-nent for several wealthy women, but she had never been to America before. She was born in India twenty-nine vears ago and was Iho daughter of a surgeon iu the Fnglish army. "She made numerous acquaintances in New York and decided to stav there. She had a small income from Scotland and could live upon that with economy. 'The idea of "suicide or murder in her case is. J think, absurd, and I am of the opinion, after reading the accounts ac-counts of the case, that she died of pto-maiue pto-maiue poison. She was always of a cheerful disposition and she could have no enemies in this country. She was athletic and in good health. "The statement published in, the dispatches dis-patches that Mrs. Fry and myself called on Miss Clerk recently iu New York is a mistake, of course." as we "left New York last October and-- have not returned re-turned since.''' ,t |
