Sandwiched with tho regular business busi-ness of the day. something of a more pleasing character demanded the attention at-tention of tho lawmakers and employees of I he lower house of the legislature Wednesday afternoon. First, Speaker E. V. Robinson aud his wife were presented pre-sented with two handsome diamond rings by the members and employees of the house; second, Scrgcant-at-Arms McKnight was presented with a signet ring, the gift of his fellow-employees, accompanied bv the thanks of tho house for his efficiency: third. Chief Clerk "W. M. Thompson was presented with a handsome gold ring, tho gift of the house and Clerk Thompson's co-workers, Mr. Allison of "vVeber countv made the presentation speech to Speaker Robinson. Securing the floor on a question ques-tion of personal privilege, Mr. Allison advanced to the sppaker's desk and said: 2dr. Speaker: Eloquent orators may speak in glittering platitudes In praise of many men now dead and gon. It is my purpose here. In modest words, not overdrawn in phrase or figure, to. on behalf of this house, voice the sentiment of tho members who have labored with you during this session of the legislature of tho state of Utah. It Is with emotions of profound esteem es-teem and recret that we prepare to officially of-ficially bid you adieu and godspeed. T c expect to see you again, of course, when time shall mark the hour for the next session of this deliberative body, no inat-tor inat-tor how zealous may be the campaign waged by our friends of the minority. Mr. Speaker, I voice the sentiment of all my fellow members in declaring that during the long, arduous and ofttlmes strenuous session through which we have labored together, no man here hut Is willing, anxious, to pay you this tribute of respect and admiration. Your high order of natural ability, your undaunted courace, your never-wearying industry, your spirit of fairness, your consideration of the rights of all Interests Inter-ests represented, your indifference alike to parties or criticism, your faculty for slftlntr the wheat from the chnff. your Judicial mind that welched and measured quickly In times of stress and strain all these qualities which we unite to praise and honor, entitle you to remain ever in our regard, so long as memory holds the key. High Tribute Paid. Where others might. ha.ve shown bias or partisan favor, you have held the balance bal-ance true: where some might have manifested mani-fested discrimination to push forward pet projects, you have ruled impartially and wisely and accorded lo every man the opportunity to exercise the rights and privileges attendant upon the duties of this office. And in recognition of the high regard, the sincere appreciation, the deep affection af-fection which moves us. one and all, at this hour. It Is my privilege, on behalf of the members and employees of this house, to piesept you with a slight token of our remembrance. But not to you alone. Big. strong, capable man that you are. vou would never amount to so much had It not been for the uplift and Inspiration In-spiration of the accomplished and devoted de-voted woman who has shared through the years of your manhood your joys and sorrows, your victories and defeats, your aspirations and your hopes. Recognizing that you owe to her. even ns much as to your own inherent talent and power. the success you have achieved, this house has included in Its tribute of respect and esteem, your estimable esti-mable and honored wife. May your life ever be as pure and unsullied un-sullied as the gold which encircles these gems, typical In their brilliancy of the" intellect which has guided us. May you 8nd your companion on life's pathway walk down Into the lengthening shadows of the years, ever secure, as now you are, in the regard and esteem of those who know you. Permit me. on behalf of my colleagues, and employees of the house, .to present you and to Mrs. Robinson these tokens of our esteem and affection. Rings Are Presented. The tokens referred to were two expensive ex-pensive and handsome diamond rings. Speaker Robinson was visibby affected, af-fected, when he attempted to reply. He said that he.waB overwhelmed and that he could not at tho time bring to his command words adequate to express ex-press his feelings of gratitude. Speaker Speak-er Robinson then referred in tho most feeling manner of tho spirit which had apparently dominated tho house during dur-ing the session and spoke of tho help I that this had been to him. Ho said I further that no speaker could do his duties acceptably without the assistance assist-ance of the members of the house. Speaker Robinson then referred to the cup presented to him by tho house two years ago nnd said it always gave him pleasure to look at the gift, rt was tho gift to Mrs. Robinson, however, that, touched. Speaker Robinson Robin-son most deeply. This, he said, was unprecedented and it was proof that the members were not only thinking of Mrs. Robinson and tho pleasure that the remembrance would give to both of them, but it was proof that the members honored tho good women of the state. After the presentation to Speaker Robinson, Mr. Holman of Salt Lake county secured the floor and in a neat speech presented Sergcant-at-Arms McKnight Mc-Knight with a gold signet "Ving, appropriately appro-priately engraved. Tlio gift was from Mr. McKnight 's assistants, but Mr. Holman, in making the presentation, complimented Mr. McKnight for his efficiency, in behalf of the members of the house. x Mr, McKnight. 's speech of acceptance accep-tance was one of the gems of the session. ses-sion. Later Mr. Morris of Washington countv presented Chief Clerk Thompson Thomp-son with a gold signet ring, with the compliments of the house. members and his assistants. Mr. Morris made a peculiarly pe-culiarly happy speech, and Mr. Thompson Thomp-son replied in a similar vein. |
