Show AN inconsistent REPORT this issue contains a synopsis of the report of the utah commission to the secretary of tho interior we would leave been glad would our space have allowed of the publication of the report in its entirety but the most salient parts of it are embodied in that we prink and enables the reader to get an idea of the nature of the report providing the dispatch has not done the commission an injustice which is very rarely tho case with anything that smacks of anti mormon spleen the report is not only noticeable noti cable for its vindictiveness ti veness but for its glaring inconsistencies in one place it shows that the laws are effective and then turns round and for additional legislation in another place it declares that it has no knowledge of new of fences under the law but makes the most infamous suggestion that people be made offenders for opinion it asks for increased powers for the courts increased penalties for the convicted and hot only for a perpetuation but an increase of the dominion by which a half dozen men keep two hundred thousand under bondage tho commission lays the flattering unction to its soul that to iwas entrusted the mission by congress to wipe out and extinguish polygamy and as far as possible polygamous tendencies den cies this ia a mistaken idea and one which the commission should not vainly flaunt every time itras an opportunity to air itself while we admit the potency of such a declaration in making the importance of the commission ap pear something extremely great yet it ia not the truth all that the commission was created for was to appoint registration and election officers and wo certificates of election to members of the legislative assembly the ninth section of the act of 1882 edmunds law plainly sas this tho commissioners have placed themselves in a very ridiculous position in baying that if utah were admitted as a state it would not be long before the gentile element with its advanced civilization its trado and traffic would be driven from the territory and the mormon theocracy be made supreme if the commissioners did not now that they were uttering an untruth when they made this assertion then we would like to know what they have been doing they have been in utah any body can tell them that such a statement is without c grain of reason or toi umon sense and ia ridiculous in the extreme the commission wilfully libels tle community when it tries to kiako chinese more preferable than cormons mormons immigrants that the commission dared make such an inference ia a matter of lupise to everybody gentiles and mor mons alike no one who lias been to utah for the purpose of finding out the true qualities of the mormon people could ever think of such an inhuman comparison the mormon community have ever been lauded for their honest their sobriety virtue their integrity teg rity their thrift and outside of their marriage customs their sterling traits of good citizenship on the whole the majority report of tho utah commission will go down to future generations as an inconsistent partisan libelous re port on a peaceable industrious community in striking contrast with this document ig the minority report sent in by gemeril Ge mcclarnand ernand that brave and bolest nan who dares stand up in dei fence of a people who have become a byword for every body the general thinks as do all honest gentiles eliat there is plenty of mormon legislation on the stature books and that its dionest administration will bring about the desired results I 1 |
