oci ers and the appointment of such committees as may be deemed expedient this is in pursuance of an order issued by the department of state an adjournment was immediately taken to visit the lake front which has been recommended fur of fair by the local commits on buildings and grounds the opinion aa to the suitability of the lake front for the purpose for aich it has selected is diversified the north and west sides of the city each had a aate to offer and the south side had two the lake front and jackson park the claims of the north ida wee we e cot presented very forcibly and those of the west side although actively advocated were not considered well formed as the citizens of that section of the city took but little part in the work of selecting the fair for he city the north and west sides are as well satisfied as they can be with atie selection of the lake front but they threatened if the fair should be located ar jackson park which ia situated six or seven miles from the court house to make trouble their ability to give effect to their threats is recognized for i has a larger voting population than the north and south sides corn omed they could defeat the bill which will be cassad by the special session of the legislature next month authorizing the city to increase its bonded indebtedness for the benefit of the fair when it is submitted to the voters at the next election for approval or reception cep tion the national committee will view the sites offered by the north and oveat sides before approving of the selection of the lake front but this will be a pare formality a they will bow to the superior judgment in this matter of the local committee which is composed af members who for many years have abben residents of the city and who ac conversant with the advantages offered each section for tho fair the real business ot the will begin tomorrow to morrow when officers will be elected if the president of the commission be taken from the com missioners at large as many persons think should be done ex minister thomas VV palmer of michigan seems the likely man but if the ranks ot the state commissioners should be chancey M depew of new york will probably be named it ia not improbable th at after the situation has been pretty thoroughly talked over with the local board the commission will appoint a good sized executive committee to remain here during the summer with power to decide all but the roost important questions the commissioners will be given a banquet tonight to night at the palmer house by tho states association the affair will be an
