| Show CONGRESS AM TAW tariff bill went through the house just as every one ex it was pretty much a party vote there was a great deal of talking on both sides but we doubt whether the country is any the wiser of course it serves to keep tariff reform prominently before the public and if the bill becomes laws as there is now every evidence that it will it may be a step toward the needed reform although it is far from answering the full requirements of the country the mckinley bill in its amended state is yet favoring many monopolies of the country to the threat detriment of the farmers and laborers until these pets of lican rule are given no advantage by the protection laws the tariff reform will be a prominent question of our national politics all industries should be placed on an equal footing and any barrier which serves to give one class of a community an advantage over another isan injury to the healthy life of our nation tho farmers of the country have suffered under this undue advantage for many vears and they are now becoming aroused to the real situation we have been the fruits of protection in our own communities muni ties the success of the wool grafl er sunder the protection laws has bem phenomenal when compared with our farmers and this is but an example in a small way when we look at what protection is doing throughout the whole country leads in educational matters the city has more and better schools than any other city of jike size in the west our teachers have biado a better display in an educational way and they have had the hearty support of the public in their labors the has ever been at the head in promoting the welfare of our public schools and though we say it ourselves it is a fact that no other paper in utah has done as much for education as we have let the public judge of this |
