the modern literary sneak alie greatest danger in literature tc day ia not from what can truthfully called sinful books says edward W bob in the ladies home journal so much as from what is termed the suggestive ge stive novel in which sin is gilded nd hinted at but not openly told and this is the novel which is working infinite damage to hundreds and thousands of girla aad women let an author write a novel in which sin is openly portrayed and the law lays bis hand upon him and the puD it besides mch a book ia rarely successful since it cannot find an open ui ailet and sin openly told is always revolting even to the most hardened mind but it is the suggestive novel which actually tells nothing yet suggests the most debasing vices the author knows just how far he can go in his nefarious traffic and keep on the safe side of the law with a supreme ettora A can command a certain amount oi rejects for a really debasing novelist for in showing his true colors ha is like a dangerous shoal which I 1 can avoid but alie suggestive novelist is a literary sneak and coward like a midnight as essm he pursues his trade in the dark oi the light of day he will hint nt vice suggest it and color it but there is where he stops close with him in personal conversation and he will ann at hia literary cowardice and tell you eliat lio means nothing these are the books chich are dangerous since they ml the vices winch they portray of their and make them attractive I 1 have heard women call them clever piquant and lively asb them in language as you will you abay tell me that the story is smart and snappy hut I 1 tell you my dear reader there only one word which truthfully de nominates this alcind of books and that is filthy professor white is suing the university of
