Show THE MOVEMENT tho eight hour movement seems again to have assumed threatening proportions on the first of may the stong organization known as abo federation of labor composed of more than a half a million men will stop work if their demands 0 working only eight hours a day is not complied with by employers pl the time is ripe for action they assert and it is quite generally believed that other labor organizations will join them in their demands tho movement seems to meet the fancy of a great many men and the laboring classes in the west than whom there are few laborers on the face of the earth who receive better wages have of late exhibited a spirit of restlessness and it seems quite probable that they may join heartily with the movement of the american federation of labor which is principally an eastern organization there has been a spirit of discontent brewing in colorado and california for some time and the same fooling has spread into the adjoining states and territories although we favor the working class and believe in fighting for them on principle in all their just demands vet the demand haars hoars shall constitute a days work seems rather radical there may be work where this time is fully enough but in the majority 0 cases it is no injury to a working man to labor a little longer and it may be highly addan tadeous to the employer especially is this the case in the west where labor is generally in high demand of course the question assumes an entirely different aspect where a country is thickly populated and the hours for work are cut down in order to give more hands employment but this state of affairs have not yet been reached iu many sections of the united states |
