Dodge of Denver, formerly a high official of the Denver & Rio Grande Western railway, has written to S. II. Babcock. commissioner of tho Commercial club traffic bureau, advocating lower coal rates. This letter comes at a most opportune op-portune time, say tho members of the traffic bureau, as tho people of Utah are all Interested In getting lower rates on coal. Colonel Dodge Is well known in tho western country. lie wns the associate of the lato General William J. Palmer In the construction of tho entire Denver & Rio Grande system of railways from the beginning In 1872 to the end, and for many years had entire cnarge of their construction and operation, wholly retiring retir-ing only after the sale of the Rio Grande Western railway In Utah. In which. In addition to the management, he held large personal Interests, to Its present owners In 1001. The letter from Colonel Dodgo follows: "Denver, Colo., May 27. 1910. "Mr. S. II. Babcock, traffic bureau, Salt Lake City, Utah. "My Dear Babcock: Your Interesting letter of the 27th Inst, was received this morning. I "The more I look Into tho mattor the more I orn convinced that It is for tho Interest of the railways to stop hauling for a loss rtac a greater distance, even to the extent of going out of some of tho business. It will greatly help to build up a local business along their lines. "This, together with low coal ratos. will also do more to build up a manufacturing iflH business along their lines than every- 'Hl thing else put together.
