Show they railroad report FROM THE JOINT COMMITTEE two members appointed on the east drain work the city council met in adjourned session tuesday night for the purpose af firing the report of tho joint committee appointed monday night to consider the petition of walter scott and wm EL king asking the city council to grant certain requests for the securing of the terminus of the TJ N C E E co for provo the committee reported as follows to the city council of provo city GENTLEMEN your joint committee on railroads and telegraph lines and streets and alloys to whom was referred the petition of walter scott andem BL king a citizens committee asking for the right of way through the city limits including the right of way over one of the streets running north and south on the east or west side of the city and two blocks for depot grounds and such other inducements as the city council may deem proper in inducing the utah nevada california railroad company to make provo city their initial point of construction of said railroad to the pacific coast report that we have carefully considered the same and recommend that provided said railroad company will mako provo city their initial point for construction of said road that fiovo city will grant said railroad company the right of way through the city limits over either of the hereinafter described routes with privilege of locating depot near seventh street on either of said routes first route from southern limits of city to 0 street thence north along 0 street to sixth street thence northwesterly to the point of gravel yard bench thence north to provo canyon second route prom southern limits of city north to point of sand bank thence northwesterly to first street thence west along first street to C street thence diagonally across block 8 plat A to B street thence north along B street to north side of city thence northeasterly to mouth of provo canyon rii chairmen WALTER SCOTT november mr farrer said be did not favor the report because it would prevent travel on first street if the railroad was granted the right of way there he thought it would be better to purchase depot grounds elsewhere mr maiben said in reference to first street that that thoroughfare was practically in possession of railroad companies he favored the western part of town mr bean favored 0 street as he thought it the most convenient he did not lika to see first street entirely monopolized by railroads he thought the most feasible plan tor the line was on the east side of town alderman scott did not like railroads to interfere with the public travel but he certainly was not in fa rf vor of traveling four or five miles tora depot As far as rights of way were concerned he knew the southwestern part of town had its fill of railroads they bad spoiled several streets there he thought depot grounds and right of way would cost more in the eastern than in the western part of town ho preferred to see all the railroads kept together he expected to see a union depot some day and if the western route was selected this would be comparatively easy the report of tho committee was adopted ail voting in favor except mr farrer councilor farrer stated to the council in reference to the east drain that not much work had been done there as the water had raised and two of the committee had been away more or less for some time past and he did not feel capable of himself to go ahead with the work without further help on motion oi Councilor brown the mayor added bean and brown to the committee council then adjourned till monday night next at 7 adock |
