| Show be walks off from oie OF THE on christmas night while under the influence of liquor the verdict last night about eight a strange man was drowned in the mill race under the plank covering at the corner of H and donth sonth streets the singular occur ance can only be accounted for by his being partly inebriate it appears that he came from the direction of knight bros livery stable and either crossed the street at the corner and fell in as he walked no the plank covering toward the jewelry store or be crossed directly from the stable and in at the upper end of mhd bridging over the race thare is no railing or banister to binder any such calamity and the man was its first victim the current is very strong at that place and although several men saw hia fall in he could not be rescued until be had passed through the entire culvert which took about two or three minutes john knight and frank H allidah were at the end of the culvert and took the man out as soon as h e came through meyeral bruises were found on his head but cone seemed have caused his death the water was soon pumped out of him and dr beckford summoned but life was so near extinct that in four min utes after he was taken from the water his pulse ceased to beat the body wa taken to the undertakers and pre pared for interment he is evidently a man who has dissipated himself from all circumstances surrounding the case 2215 were on his person part of it in a buckskin sack and part in a buckskin pure in the purse were some badly worn papers one badly blocher writ ten on a D R G R E heading dated 12 10 9 pac hold ogden little can be learned from that as it was badly torn A receipt as follows was in the pursa dec 24 1890 ee from george and james smith for one months rent M C he wore u dark colored shoddy sack coat with yellow threads running through it number eight brogan shoes with buckles overalls dark ahart and light colored tie with brown stripes a pair of chacy gloves were in his pocket also two pocket knives a box of salve and some pills he is a little bald and evidently about thirty yeara old it i evident that he is a R R employee and possibly will be identified before he ie buried there should be some protection about that place a screen or something else to prevent a child or person pas sins through coroner today to day paneled em a jury consisting of H S pyne william freshwater and john E hills after bearing all the evidence that could be obtained in the case and examining the papers found on the body the jarv returned a verdict that the said james smith came to lii death by drowning in accidentally walking off the bridging of the factory race on H street north of seventh and recommended that iron grating or something suitable be placed at the head of said bridging for the abety of the public |
