Show LETTER the chief engineer answers powderly HE DEFINES HIS POSITION though he says it is not necessary for or any one kise to ask him to do so new YORK aug 28 special the latter given below waa written by P M arthur chief engineer of the grand international brotherhood of locomotive engineers to an engineer on the third avenue elevated road the let ler is in response to a letter on the sub act of the new york central strike and the first utterance of arthur which auly defines his position towards the central strikers and knights of labor the letter is as follows CLEVELAND ohio auy 23 DEAR sin AND your leter of the int with and other clip pinya from new york papers is received in reply 1 will say that I 1 have not received any letter from powderly he claims to have written me a private letter on the trouble and wants into define my po if lie idera his letter that which appears in the a private one I 1 dont know that I 1 can nn owera letter that reaches me in that way it is unnecessary for powderly or any one else to ask me to define the position of the brotherhood of locomotive engineers in the present troubles on the new york central the policy of the brotherhood is well known to him and the public as it has been repeatedly explained from the public and published in the newspapers he says some time ago I 1 telegraphed him meaning me that I 1 would meet him in cleveland ard when I 1 arrived there I 1 could not find him high or low my telegram had been by him but my efforts to locale him were fruitless now the facts in lie case so far as I 1 can recollect are iheke some four years ago I 1 received a telegram from powderly requesting me to meet him at the union depot in cleveland on the arrival of a certain train on the lake shore road owing to my absence from my office I 1 did not receive his message until after the departure of the train and I 1 so informed him by letter addressing it to him at scranton dc ranton I 1 do noi believe he stopped over and looked for me would have bad no difficulty in finding one at his office or at my home as I 1 am one or the other when in cleveland he bellg a wilful falsehood when he says others have been unable to find me when they tried to do so any man who tries to find me when I 1 am in cleveland can do so with so very little no man whether leader or private in the ranks of labor ever came to my office that he was no treated courteously while I 1 differ with men as to the best methods to be employed to secure a certain end I 1 always have been liberal enough to concede to every roan the same rights and privileges I 1 ask for myself when tha present trouble on the new york central first occurred I 1 advised the engineers to abstain efrom all participation in it and to attend strictly to their own business I 1 gave the same advice when the strike occurred on the gould system a few years ago my advice to the brotherhood of engineers when the men employed in the other branches of the railroad service had been on strike was to mind their own business and nut to do aej illing that did not properly belong to them as engineers can powderly say the same I 1 think not whenever the engineers have been on strike we never asked any other labor organization to assist us t s true sonae of the members of alie order during the chicago burlington quincy strike asked the switchmen to auit but they did it on their own responsibility not bv the authority of the organization consequently 1 hold we are perfectly justified in maintaining a strictly neutral kopsi tion when others are nudged in i con their employ eia powderly accuses the members of alie brotherhood of locomotive engineers of taking he places of the striking firemen if that is true the division of alipy are members will deal with them it is not nathin the my authority to deal with individual members I 1 wonder if had expelled who took th 0 places of our men en the C B Q yours fraternally eastern CONCORD N H crops ire kited the states TOPEKA kan aug 27 special the monthly crop report of secretary mehler of the just issued contains the following it is still early to approximate with any degree of accuracy the total aggregate wheat product ot the united states for this year but enough is known to warrant the statement that it will be very much less than the crop of 1889 the crop of 1889 was placed by the department part ment of agriculture washington last december at bushels and from the government reports just issued we estimate the crop of thia year at from to bachels les than that cf last year the stat ician of the department of agriculture places the general overage of the winter wheat july 1 at per cent of an average crop and in alio report enst published he places the gen eral average of spring wheat at per cent taking bogli the winter and spring wheat together the average ia about 80 per cent or 20 per cent less than a full average crop taking last year as a full average crop it was we find that our crop this year is about 20 per cent or 12 less than last years crop the aggregate estimated wheat product of twelve leading states for 1890 is 17 5 17 less than eliat of 1889 we are I 1 think warranted saying that the wheat crop of the united states for this dearia at least bushel short 0 last years product by reason of this heavy shortage in the wheat crop of our country together with other minor causes wheat has been steadily ing in ance until today to day in topeka it is worth 85 cents per bushel and if the advises advices recently received from europe to the effect that a shortage in the wheat crop of european countries is found to exist it will probable advance tol per bushel in kansas before next january the annual meeting of the vienna congress recently held in that city published its estimate of the worlds wheat crop and claims there is a shortage of bushels in the wheat growing countries of the eastern hemisphere the indication are now that the worlds wheat consumption is about to overtake the worlds production and that wheat will henceforth command better prices it further demonstrates the fact stated before thai the way to increase the price of wheat is to diminish the supply ine noam |
