Driskoll and 11. K. Kennedy with the murder of Officer Riley, numerous theories as to Riley's death are boing advanced by various members of the depart ment. Prominent among these new theories is one which points to the fact that the holdup being brought to the police station sta-tion bv the officer was the man who fired rfio fatal shot. The supporters of this latest theory bring forward a number num-ber of circumstances to prove their assertion. as-sertion. It is said that I he murdered officer always walked on the right, side of prisoners when they were being brought to the police station. He did this for two reasons, ono being that ho held the right, arm of the prisoner with his left hand, thus tending lo provent a righl-handod man from drawing draw-ing a revolver, and also that tho officer of-ficer wished lo havo tho froo use of his right hand in caso trouble started-during started-during tho arrest. The Powder Burns. The powder-burnt flesh around the gun-wound under the left shoulder of tho murdered officer tends to show, .so the police say, that the gun which shot, Rilev was pushed up ngainst the shoulder shoul-der "of the, officer by the man who must have been walking on tho left side of the officer and n little to the rear. How ho came to bo slightly behind the officer of-ficer is explained, so the police claim, by the fact that Riley stepped off the curbing slightly in advance of the prisoner, pris-oner, who thereupon drew his gun and fired tho fatal shot. The supporters of this theory pooh-pooh pooh-pooh tho idea that the man who was soon running up behind the officer and the prisoner did the shooting, and in support of their contention, state that Ih'j officer would in that case have been shot through the back. They also point out that rhc fich would not have been powder burnt. A number of persons called at the. police station Saturday and were closeted tho grcatrr part of their time with Chief Sheets and Chief Barlow. Just what the results of these conferences confer-ences wero the police l-yfuso to say, maintaining that publicity might spoil their plans. Relief Fund. The. fund for the relief of the family of tho murdered officer had reached the sum of $ii00 by Saturday night, and in speaking of it. Chief Barlow said: "I am proud of the way tho citizens havo actod regarding tho Xund for the widow and child of Officer .Rile.y.
