Not a streot car moved, all being Ktallod whero thoy happened to be at tho time, and -not a wheel turned at tho Jordan station. The crowds from tho theaters wero forcod to walk homo and tho cab drivors did tho best business of many a long day. It all happonod just bocauso something wont wrong at the Jordan station. Thi3 is tho distributing point of eloctric power for tho lights and stroet cars of tho entire en-tire city. What happened no ono seemed to know up to 3 o'clock this morning, but that, something really did happen can bo testified to by hundreds of Salt Lako residents. The crowds were leaving thchoaters whon tho accident occurred. Scores upon scores of people were wedged into i tho street cars homeward bound, when suddouly tho cars camo to a stop, the lights went out and refused to como on again. Meanwhile things wero happening over at tho Jordan station. A , larqc room in which much of tho machinery is located, was on fire. Waste, rags and oil wore burning, and as water could not bo poured upon tho flaming stuff without danger of causing an explosion which would havo wrecked tho place and caused probable loss of life, it simply sim-ply was allowed to burn until it became tired and quit. , After a whilo the central office had things tuned up and the remaining plant at Jordan station was started. Thon, and not until then, did the wheols move. It is presumed that the cause will bo ascertained some time today and the necessary ropairs made. |
