called by alie chamber of commerce to consider what inducements could be offered for the establishment of iron works in provo tho meeting was called to order by president W H dusenberry of the chamber of commerce who in his opening remarks stated that parties in pittsburg had written to individuals in salt lake city desiring information as to the advisability of establishing extensive iron works and rolling mills in that place or the vicinity and asking what inducements the people would offer to secure the establishment of such an industry mr A A noon stated eliat a communication had been sent to wallace lyman of salt lake cita well known for of iron which by being i read would fully explain the situation clerk B bachman then read the follow ing GENTLEMEN we write you in regard to establishing a rolling mill for the manufacturing of bar rod and baud iron in your city or locality to meet the wants of railroads and genella trade from our knowledge of the west in the matter of iron and from the large quantities made by our home manufactures and also many between here and kansas city that is sent throughout the entire west even to california wo know that a rolling mill properly but not expensively constructed would pay well on a reasonably investment and are ready to operate cooperate co with proper parties in such an enterprise while we know that the price of coal would be somewhat against the location of salt lake city we also know that the low rates at which wrought and cast iron scrap can be had to say nothing as to the great advantage in the matter of freight will far more than outweigh the disadvantage in cost of coal in your city we would suggest as to cliar acter and capacity ol 01 such a mill that it be operated wholly on scrap and with capacity say for an output of twenty five ton s daily with modern machinery to reduce cost of labor to a minimum the ground donated either by the city or a number of enterprising citizens railroads to place a switch or sidings from main tracks to the mill at their expense all of which has been done in locations already favored with many manufactories manu factories and the investment including freight and machinery from here to salt lake city will not exceed say one hundred and fifty thousand dollars should you be disposed to entertain the matter wa shall be pleased to hear from you very respectfully yours LEWIS FOU MACHINE co mr noon continuing said that when he read this letter he wrote to the parties direct as superintendent of the utah valley iron works acquainting them of the vast iron beds there were in this vicinity and the excellent facilities the country offered for the establishment of iron works in this place to this a reply had not as yet been received I 1 there not having been time it would be unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages and benefits that would flow from the establishment of an industry of this kind mr noon gave statistics allowing the great amount of iron consumed in foundries in salt lake ogden and other places and said that the foundry in provo labored under great disadvantages on account of not being able to get the iron they wanted without giving 48 per ton in behalf of his company mr abon offered as an inducement the gift of of block in the iron mines and personally he would give the same amount which meant one tenth of the stock if the city or the citizens would now go to work and accompany this with the offer of a suitable location for tho establishment of the iron foundry then provo would have some show of securing this great industry our iron company is willing to do all they can and personally I 1 am we must be united and liberal if we expect to accomplish com the object we desire and aci at once mr W H dusenberry thought a bonus would have some effect in the securing of the iron works if ws could agre on the matter hon W N dusenberry referred to the vast benefits that would result from the creation of iron works in this city it would do more good to the agricultural population alian one at first is disposed to credit we have more national advantages right in aliis locality than they have in scranton pennsylvania where the famous bessemer steel borka are located we havo the greatest body of coal there is in the west within a radius of forty miles with mountains of iron all around and the best of railroad corn is no overdrawn picture wo would not have to ship iron from any other locally to make tho different kinds of compositions wo have every grade of iron right in our midst we also have any amount of water power in this district in fact everything cussary to warrant the establishment and successful conducting of immense iron works in provo jay right at our door waiting to be used the gentleman was heartily in favor of a committee being elected to take this matter in hand judge J E booth had been interested in the iron business fir a number of years and the reason why the iron company had made the offer they biad wae that aliey realized they had valuable property in their beds of iron but they vere unable to develop them and they could afford to give one tenth of their stock to develop the balance individually he would donate 59 towards inducements du cements to secure he establishment of iron works in provo of course the parties will go where they will get the best inducements tsie saving 0 freight alone on iron ware from the missouri biver to this territory bould be a source of wealth to provo dr pike alluded to the fact that utah was paying per annum for pig iron alane and about for manufactured iron besides this ve could secure the iron trade of the bhole rocky mountain region as also the opening up of other in connection with the iron works hundreds of young men who go to colorado montana and other places for work would then be employed at home individually 50 to help secure the establishment of rolling works in provo mr henry stagg was willing to contribute bis mite in tho w a of induce to escure the of iron borka in provo and offered mr 8 S jones could see from what had been said that iron works would be a source of great to the community and he would put his shoulders to the wheel in the matter and help with means to secure the erection of lucli an industry sir W H brown was of alio same opinion as mr jones and would contribute of his means whenever a committee for that purpose upon him mr B bachman thought it would be a good thing consult to the city in tho matter A sum of money donated by them or a track of land offered for the location of the borka should they bo established would return to alia city a hundred fold let a subscription list be started among the citizens and let each man subscribe what be was able he give and possibly sibly iron works established in aliis city would do more good than any other industry judge booth made a motion that the chamber of commerce represent to the iron company that the utah chanty manufacturing and iron company would give them a suitable location of five acres in the first ward pasture and also whatever sum might be raised by public subscriptions the motion was seconded by mr bachman and carried unanimously hon W N dusenberry moved that a committee of five be appointed to learn what can be obtained from the citizens by way of inducements aa judge booth stated that bis
