Show APOSTLE SHOWS DEMISE it has been understood for weeks now past that apostle erastus snow was very sick from an affection of the kidneys and that he was gradually sinking the people were requested to petition the almighty in his behalf to aparo ilia life ant ho was destined to enter upon another field of labor and he has gone lie died a few minutes to aeden on sunday evening at his residence in the eighteenth ward salt lake city erastus snow was born at st johnsbury caledonia county november ath 1818 and would have been therefore 70 years of age in a few months his fathers name ass levi snow and hia family were among the early settlers of the massachusetts colony he became a member of the mormon church when he was 14 years of age and was a preacher at 15 at 16 he was ordained to the office of a priest and soon afterwards traveled as a missionary into the states of new york new hampshire and vermont in april 1836 he went on a mission to pennsylvania he was absent a little over eight months returning to kirtland december 19 1830 la which time he traveled 1600 miles preached discourses baptized 50 persons and organized several branches of alie church he was also a zealous worker and ag a consequence bore his part in the persecutions in missouri haf was clinely identified with all important movements and fulfilled several missions he was among the first ia the toilsome journey across the plains after the evacuation of nauvoo had been decided on he was with tha saints in winter quarters he entered tho salt lake valley ahead of the main company on the of july 1847 using his own words he says when we ascended bed butte near the mouth of emigration canyon and gave us alie first glimpse of the blue waters of the great salt lake we simultaneously swung our hats and shouted hosannah 1 for the spirit told us that here the saints should find rest after about six weeks labor laying out the city and tort plow ingmand planting fields and building cabins around block he started with the rear camp of the pioneers on the return trip early in august and on the last day of october reached winter quarters now florence neb where he had left his family having been six weeks without tasting bread in the month of september he arrived back in salt lake valley and soon after was appointed one of the presidency of that Stake during the following winter he was ordained an apostle to help fill vacancies caused by the apostasy apo stacy of liy man wight and the organization of the quorum of the first presidency out of the quorum of the twelve at the semiannual semi annual conference in october he was called to go on a mission to denmark leaving ten days afterwards he landed in copenhagen on the ast 1st of june 1850 he then fulfilled a mission to scandinavia and returned to salt lake august 20 1852 having been absent nearly three years at the october conference 1853 lie WAS called in connection with president george A smith to gather fifty families to strengthen the settlements in iron county and in 1854 he went to st louis to assume charge of the affairs of alie church there and in the western states in november ol 01 that year he began the publication ol 01 the st louis luminary an advocate ol 01 the saints and teachings he returned to utah in the autumn of 1855 and in alie following year he performed a brief nia to the states he per prior to the fall when he in connection with george A smith and other elders was assigned to the task of building up southern utah this mission started from salt lake city november and from thenceforth the lot and labors of apostle snow became mainly identified with southern utah where he was known as the father of that portion of utah inhabited by members of the church he was also identified with the settlements settle menta in arizona and lesico lex ico of late years he spent considerable of bis time at the latter place in his last illness he surrounded by members of his family and many kind and friends have visited him the change that precedes dissolution occurred at half past one yesterday sunday afternoon he retained consciousness until about fifteen minutes before his death when he sank peacefully to rest as if falling asleep the noble spirit leaving its mortal tenement at the time stated at the opening of this artice |
