Show crops reports utah reports from our correspondents in all parts of the territory continue to prove that the region of greatest water scarcity is the region of greatest population while this does not agree with the oft told theory that settlements and tree culture increase and stimulates the natural water supply it bears out the doctrine that has been reiterated of late both by jones and hollister that human agencies and human activities hava very little effect on natures water s sterns from the extreme eastern part of the territory our ashley correspondent writes that tho streams are now getting low and the farmers are just beginning to realize the scarcity of water but ho believes they are better off than any other country in utah thy will raise about three quarters of a crop and commenced to cut wheat about the of july the orchards are young but in Ashley has forty men at work building reservoirs arlund the foot of bald mountain a peak of the uintah range some awen ty five miles to the east of the town surrounding the peak which is fee high or about thirty lakes most of which can tapped at slight cost this will give to the towns of ashley I 1 and vernal water resources ansur passed by any other towns in the territory and it is estimated that with proper management this is the last season in which any scarcity will be experienced in that neighborhood so much for the eastern verge of utah and from the extreme western edge a informs us that the crops at present are favorable but as the water is somewhat scarce it is feared that without rams they may lose a fourth of their grain further south but still on the western edge we hear from carowan parowan that the water is holding out this season exceptionally well and the crops have a most hopeful look although grasshoppers have now come in such numbers that a new source of fear has arisen they do not harvest there until the middle of august in san pete county which is one of the chief or our grain districts the best portions of the valley have had sufficient water to mature the crops in mount pleasant and fairview it has held out fairly well also in the neighborhood of manti but at ephraim and moroni there has bees an undeniable shortage and poor crops are the result at morgan city there an abundance of water for everybody and the crops are superb we have now surrounded the territory and had a good many reports from the middle counties and see no reason to change our estimate of the territorial crop as given in our last issue but though the crops of grain will average so well things do not look favorable for the orchards which in many places cannot bring their fruit to perfection even where well watered the extreme dryness of the ar seems to have somo effect upon the fruit causing it to ripen before it has reached its full proportions whether this will also be seen in the later crops of peaches we connot say but it is certain that tho apricot rop is almost a total failure from this cause |
