is that he wandered off or was enticed to the place seven aniles below where he either committed suicide or was murdered the result of the coroners inquest was that he came to his death from two wounds in his left breast and it was thought a pistol shot in his left wrist in the hands of some unknown person his friends were hardly satisfied as they had not recognized his remains and he was accordingly exhumed yesterday in the presence of two of his own brothers R H jones attorney mii M ii ensign coroner your and a number of others dr perkins of ogden applied the knife and it was found contrary to former belief that there was no pistol shot through wrist and the skull was uninjured the doctor declared that the deceased came to his death by means of some sharp instrument which penetrated his clothing and sank deep into the heart near the apex the body was in such a state of decomposition that the brothers of the deceased could recognize him only by his clothing the remains were dressed as neatly as circumstances would admit placed in a handsome casket and again lowered into the gaping grave A E manning was a member of the mormon church and leaves a family of eight small children at hooper LQ ceic augden iune bound his sheep camp north of bear eiver city was seen in willard bangham and sunday night at hamptons Ham bridge the evening he is supposed to have wandered off and met his death chiq morning the coroners jury still undecided as to whether mr manning was foully murdered or went north with the hopes of finding further clue up to time of writing p m they had not returned though they are expected every minute the evidence so far points neither one way nor the other but it is to be hoped that the inquest will prove beyond a doubt what was the cause of his death LATER the coroners jury returned with no further particulars of importance but still more decided in the opinions that manning came to his death by some unknown person 1 I am going out to tend my horses but will soon be back are the last words he is known to have uttered saying these he walked out of standings house toward the barn kumor has it that there were a number of men around the pi ace that they had been drinking and manning had a row of some kind with ona of them who was known to be a terror also that a pistol shot was heard sometime come time after nine your correspondent saw blood spattered ships from the small blacksmiths shop which is within half a rod of the river and near bear river bridge and within yards of the house when mannings body was discovered a jack knife which he purchased in recently was found underneath there was no blood near the spot which leads to the supposition that he was murdered and taken to this place the corpse was on a level piece of ground between two roads one man was known to have passed the place tuesday the day before the finding of the body within twenty five yards of the spot the view was unobstructed yet no signs of the angel of death were apparent the first inquest of the coroners jury was to the effect that he had been shot through the left wrist and struck on the head but the doctors postmortem examination disapproved that the wrist injury was found to be only skin deep and the skull smooth and solid the brain chest and abdominal organs were to decomposed to detect any disease if it were present there is almost as much evidence to show that it was a case of suicide it is said that manning had been drinking in ogden and that it took him a day and a half to reach willard only fourteen miles that i he called for liquor sunday at brigham but was refused when he proceeded on his way to hamptons Ham bridge and it is thought he could get no liquor there and perhaps in a half crazed state of rayed off and the assistance si of his knife corresponding sp exactly with those in the breast were found in his clothing and postmortem the examination revealed a great quantity of nn spilled blood remaining in the body the position in which ho was found could have cut off all flow and it is probable that he received th wounds and died on the spot where he was found it be learned unless something unlocked for turns up whether it be suicide or not people who have looked the case up are divided in their belief some declaring positively that it was a case of foul murder which is the verdict of the coroners jury while others as firmly believe it P case of suicide L EIVER CITY utah june 11 89 |
