Show THE UTAH LAKE the action in staking it a reservoir site in connection with the selection of utah like as a reservoir site the cial document relating to which wo pub dialed in our last issue v e are requested to state by T C bailey gov eminent land agent in salt lake city that the new homestead law of march and the instructions alie re under have not yet been received at the local office and therefore it cannot be acted upon by the kenister Ke gister and receiver until such instructions are received J fewson smith a member of the water commission recently app pointed by the salt lake city council expresses him elf greatly pleased at the action of commissioner Stoc blager of the department of the interior in ordering that the site of utah lake be reserved as a reservoir gite together with all lands situated two statute miles of the border of said lake at hach water further coteries cn teries of land on the lake shore said mr smith wili of course be refused and it Is but natural to suppose that the people who have acquired title to land within the two mile limit will receive compensation if they are compelled to surrender their titles in the interest of the public weal this action on the part of the government will do much to rid salt lake of a condi hat has confronted time to time and which has stared her in the face whenever she lias made a move to store water for future uso the difficulty has not been so much a lack of water as alie protest from alie residents along the shore of the lake that their properties were haing damaged the result of this was the establishment of what is known as compromise point beyond which alie gatei could nut be raised the action of the government however will permit the water to ashegh I 1 as possible md instead of millions upon millions of gallons of the precious fluid running to waste during the winter and early spring months it can be held back until such time as we need it utah lake is a big body of water and the raising of even a foot means salvation for thousands of acres of land that now receive scarcely a drop it should be borne in mind that no entries or filings on land located within the prescribed limits of two miles will be permitted A survey is being made under the direction of the government the purpose of which is to ascertain its condition and segregate what is still in the public domain from eliat which is legally in possession of private parties when tho survey id completed and a report made it will form a base of operations for alie practical establishment of a reservoir there will be no disturbance of existing titles the surveying party is now at spanish fork the subject is one of much importance it the project carries a large amount of land now without water will be rendered arable of course it will require acara to perfect the enterprise |
