opiates which toward morning induced a state of semi consciousness in which he remained until he would occasionally partially revive and recognize the loved ones by him A relapse soon followed and for a number of hours previous to his death he was practically unconscious in his last hurs h urs the dying justice was surrounded by the bembera of his family the remains will be interred in the family lot in spring grove cemetery cincinnati but tho details will not bf perfected until the arrival of the dead justices oldest son mortimer matthews of cincinnati and his youngest daughter grace i ho wife of horace cleveland assistant united states district attorney at cincinnati and bid nephew justice harlan the engagement of miss matthews and justice gray wap announced this week and the marriage is expected to occur shortly in the united states supreme court immediately upon assembling i 0 chief justice announced the death matthews and as a mark of respect to his memory the court adjourned until tuesday washington march 22 the senate chaplain in his opening prayer made feeling reference to the death of justice matthews the vice dent laid before the senate a note from the chief justice announcing the death of justice matthews and saying the funeral would probably occur on monday the senate then adjourned out of respect for the dead justice shortly after 10 this morning the intelligence of the death of associate justice matthews reached the supreme court the proper officer immediately authorized draping black of the seat lately occupied by the associate justice when the hour of twelve arrived the court assembled as usual upon taking his seat the chief made the following announcement no the court has received the melancholy intelligence of the death of its beloved member justice matthews in this city at 10 this morning na business therefore will be transacted the court will adjourn till tuesday justice matthews had been an invalid for years during the winter of 1888 he frequently complained of indigestion and muscular rheumatism and es spring wore on he began to suffer from obstinate diarrhea from which he lost a great deal of strength and flesh at this time it was thought his great devotion to work was to a large degree responsible for his illness and no doubt iwas and acting upon the advice of his physicians and friends who had great hopes that a air might prove a lasting benefit he went to massachusetts stopping for some time at lenox and then nantucket but he continued to lose ground during the summer he had several attacks of muscular rheumatism associated with a high fever which would confine him to his bed several days at a time on his return home ho improved he continued to his dyt eatery attacks which always greatly reduced his strength and flesh these came on at intervals of three or four between them ho would have periods oi marked improvement and several times when dr bohnson Toh was confidently hoping to relieve him he became weaker than over during last february he suffered greatly with a complication 0 mystics and irita about this time ulcers of the cornea appeared with effusion in tho pleural cavity attributable to his rheumatic condition he recovered however from both these latter complications for about eight weeks previous to his final illness he had been absolutely free from pain and his physician and family had great hopes 0 his ultimate recovery tho hope was modified however by ano fact that while he bad a good appetite and good digestion he did not gain in flesh although his strength improved daily at this time he sat up during a part of each day and walked about his room and into other rooms on the same floor but about the ath of march ho had an acuto attack of high favor which lasted several days and which very much exhausted him after tins passed off ho to be improving with the return of am appetite but a recurrence of chills and fever associated with cyb tica still further added to his exhaustion and debility during ill this time his pu ae was exceedingly feeble and the action of the heart was sustained only by rein odies administered for that purpose yesterday afternoon he had a prolonged chill and a high fever which brought an intense local suffering this was followed in a few hours by another chill from which he could not rally he to lose strength and died a few at his late residence on connecticut avenue monday afternoon at 1 they will be brief and simple and will be conducted by the kev dr hamlin pastor of the church of the covenant the members of the
