Show VARSITY TRACK TUN I constant mum Coach iUaddock Has Lined Up His Men for Kveiifs for (Season. Tho last week has been ra titer disns-troitK disns-troitK tn outdoor trainintr at tbo University. Uni-versity. It was only for a short time Monday afternoon that Coach Madtloek w;is able to cive his athletes anv outdoor out-door work. Indoor work has been car- . riod on in a rather desultory manner, but as most of the men had gotten used j to outdoor work, it proved rather dilli- cult to o much in on the board floor. i Following is the present linoun for the events this season, as nearly as Conch Mnddoek has been able to croup the men, although in the distance runs, there are fi number who may be changed slightly, and also others who have not 3'ct appeared for training: 100-yard dash Moore, Whitney, Riser, Ri-ser, Calder and Karrick. 220-yard dash Moore, Pitt, "Whitney, C. Russell. Calder and Carriole. MO-vard i tin Pit I, Roberts, Bribton, Barton. Runyon and Price. SSO-yard run Pitt, Ferguson and Alley. Al-ley. Mile run Robison, Bailey. Spaulding and Crandall. High jump Nielson, Adams, Ifcdges. High .hurdles Nielson. Adams, Huntsman aud Gates. Low hurdles Brccden, Niolsou and Gales. Pole vault Adams, Russell, Laublv and Spitko. Hammer throw Bennion, Russell and Palm, Broad 'jump .Tessup, Adams, Price and Barton. Shot put Bennion, Russell and Palm. Broad jump Jessup, Adams. Price and Calder. Four-men relay team will be composed com-posed of tho four fastest men in the team. Only Mooro Left, Of last year's team of sprint, men, Moore is tho only ono left. Whitney : and Biser were on the I rack, but last I year was their first year, and except for their appearance in the prep meet, where they carried off all honors, they havo not shown their worth in working for the "TJ" team. This year, however. how-ever. Coach Maddock expects much of both of them. Calder is a new man from Vcrnnl. doing his first work at tlio "University. For the first time in four years ho has been on tho Varsitv team, Captain Dale Pitt will try out for the 220-yard dash as well as tho 4-10 and half-mile. The Russell brothers will also enter sprinting as a new field. Maddock Makes Changes. One of tho changes which Coach Maddock decided upon after his experiments experi-ments of the past month was to transfer trans-fer Niel Judd from the half-mile to the low hurdles. Judd has developed a stride that, is only excelled by tho one possessed by Will Butler, tho crack hurdler hur-dler of the team two vcars ago. Besides Judd, Coach Maddock has succeeded in developing good form in Nielson, who is also a comparatively new man. Tu the long runs there should ue no difficulty for "University men to carry olf first honors. Bailey, who won his "U" last year, is back at the school. The experience gained then will jio doubt prove valuable this season. Spaulding is a new man at the. school, lie has nr-ver done any long-distance running, but Coach Maddock feels that with the proper sort of training ho will be able to make a top notchor of him. Both Adams and "Russell are with the school again, and will undoubtedly continue con-tinue to take first f.nd second nlaces in the polo vault. Loubly is a freshman from tbo highschool who has a record of a few inches over ten feet. 2Tot Prepared for Jump, The event for which the school now seems to be the most unprepared is tho running broad jump. Both Swapp and Hunt, who were last year's heavy point winners, are not at school. Adams' specialty spe-cialty is the pole vault, but he can maki? about twenty feet on tho broad jump. Jessup is a" new man who gives promise of a big jump, but as yot he lias not been able to cover more than twenty feet. The v.'cight men will be unchanged this j'car except for Swapp. Swapp holds the Rocky mountain record for throwing tho discus. This is slightly over 107 feet. As yet no one elso now enrolled at the school has been able to hurl the brass mass more than about 95 feet. Bennion and Russell arc both good husky men and will no doubt handle the weights creditably, Bennion holds the State record for lhe hummer throw. This is 135 foot 5 inches, but on practice prac-tice occasions Bennion has thrown the hammer as far as 141 feet |
