The esteem In which Mathlas Hlnchcliffc. for thirty-two thirty-two years depot policeman at the Ogden Union depot, wns held by the traveling: public has not been hotter exemplified than with n tokon of esteem and gratitude grati-tude presented him by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, In Ocdcn. the memento being be-ing delivered to Mr. Hlnchclirfe by Rev. Father P. M. Cushnahan himself. During the period of his service al tho depot. "Dad" I-Ilnchcllffe was perhaps not any more attentive to tho Sisters of tho Holy Crosn and their Juvenile charges In going to and coming from trains than lio was to the general traveling public. But his uniform enro nnd courtesy, his presonco at all times when he was needed need-ed In the handling of pnEsengers lo and from trains, was perhaps noticed more Intimately by theso Klstcr3 than by the traveling public generally, though many members of this class nave learned to ltlco nnd remember "Dad." I-Iowcvnr, the sisters decided lo give him a tokon of their respect; and after It was completed It was carried to his house by the father of St. Joseph's parish par-ish nnd presented to him. Ho and his aged wife wero overcome with emotion at tho receipt of the kindly tribute. It Is a large picture. In a frame, executed In tho most artistic manner In Sacred Heart academy. At the upper edge Is a beautiful sceno In sunset colors, which might be termed, "The Sunset of Life, ' and across this, in artistic letters. Is the legend: "To the Esteemed Mnthlas Hlnchcliffc." The sides and corners of tho picture arc decorated with little scapes, showing railroads, the signal posts of a railroad, and on tho right side Is a railroad Hag. with the years 1S75-1907. the years of "Dad's" service In the one post. It Indicates that on Februarv 13 of this year "Dad" I-Ilnchcllffe was flagged out of the service on n pension under the beneficent system of the Oregon Short Lino management. But tho most beautiful sentiment prevails pre-vails In tho center of the picture In the form of a tribute of respect and esteem In four versos, two on each sldo of the center. His life mny have been prosaic In Its dolly routine, nnd perhaps others thnn the Sisters of tho Holy Cross have seen and observed Its native purity and beauty. |
